Chinese Character Charades MECHANICS: Divide the class into teams. Choose a student from one team to act out a Chinese character. You can use gestures, sounds, or even draw a picture to represent the character. The team has a limited time (e.g., 30 seconds) to guess the correct Chinese character. The first team to guess correctly earns a point. Rotate the teams and continue playing until all teams have had a chance. Chinese LITERATURE Read the text about the Chinese Literature on page 32. Developing Before Listening Plan for the listening task. As your teacher announces a listening activity, he/she usually prepares you and provides pre-listening prompts. Note these prompts carefully: Before Listening Take note of the purpose of the activity. Know why your teacher wants you to listen to the material. Before Listening Predict what the story is about based on its title and/or featured illustrations Before Listening Take note of the background knowledge your teacher is tapping. What questions did he/she ask you? Write these questions and use them in guiding yourself as you listen for details While Listening Focus on the listening task. Make sure that you have your pen and paper with you. Write the details you have decided as important for note-taking in your before-listening activity. While Listening Confirm your predictions and check for inaccurate guesses. While Listening Decide what is important to understand and what is not. Remember that you make this decision very quickly. Your before- listening preparation will help you do this. While Listening Write down your apprehensions or uncertainties and ask your teacher’s help if necessary. After Listening Finalize your comprehension of the listening material. After Listening Validate your comprehension through the assessment activities your teacher will give. After Listening Assess whether the strategies you used are suitable for the purpose. After Listening Learn from the listening activity and modify your strategies if necessary. After Listening Seek the help of your teacher if necessary to improve your skill. Determining the Tone and Mood Facial Expression Facial expressions, gestures, and other body movements help to communicate clarify what the speaker says. However, when one does not see the speaker, the tone of the voice often helps clarify what the speaker says and means. Thus, you can identify a speaker’s emotions through vocal expression, pitch force or volume, rate of speech and phrasing. Tone Tone is a word used to describe the writer's feelings or attitude toward his/her subject. An effect listener identifies the toine of the story being read. It help him/her better understand the story being listened to. Different tones may be shown by the speaker. The speaker may be funny, sad, surprised, sarcastic, serious, disappointed, humorous, sympathetic, or sentimental. Exercise 2 Before Listening. In your notebook, complete the table with information you get from the listening cativity. Your teacher will play a recording of sentences. Listen carefully for the tone expressed by the speaker.
