EMOTIONS: JOY, PLEASURE, HOPE MARIA SANDRA CRUZ, MSN, RN JOY “An emotional state of feeling extreme gladness, delight, or exultation of the spirit arising from a sense of well-being or satisfaction” JOY Experienced in 2 ways: passive and active Passive joy involves tranquility and a feeling of contentment with things as they are Active joy involves a desire to shares one’s feelings with others DEGREES OF JOY Serenity is the state of being calm, peaceful, and untroubled; tranquility Ecstasy is a state of overpowering exaltation; an intense feeling beyond reason and self-control SOURCES OF JOY Behavioral scientists argue that joy or happiness can predict health and longevity Joy does not just happen to you. Everyone has the power to make small changes to our behavior, surroundings, and relationships that impact our happiness. SOURCES OF JOY Mind – often comes from within, tame negative thoughts and approach every day with optimism Home – where you live: country, town, neighborhood, home Relationships – tend to be more joyful when we connect with people Work and Money – more money won’t make you happy, but meaningful work and finding a balance will Being kind – positive energy is contagious FUNCTION OF JOY FUNCTION OF JOY PLEASURE Refers to experience that feels good, that involves the enjoyment of something A feeling of happy satisfaction and enjoyment Usually associated with sensory pleasure and satisfying basic biological drives such as eating, exercise, hygiene, sleep and sex Subjective in nature, vary from person to person EFFECTS OF JOY MIXED EMOTIONS HOPE A feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen It involves two things Believing there’s a path to reach your goals Having the willpower to walk it HOPE Hope is about getting up when we fall It’s believing there is a way, even if you can’t see it yet People who are high on hope come up with more ways to get things done, and because of this, they find the path to success more often HOPE Through hope training, you will develop the ability to find multiple ways to do something If one way fails or gets cut off, there are always others You will learn just how much control you have over your life and your goals We can all learn to be more hopeful HOPELESSNESS Shift your expectations Recognize that you can change your life at any point Look for meaning in the most challenging moments 8 TIPS ON Listen to another person’s story BEING Return to your home base – identify what you love more than HOPEFUL yourself Add some wow to your world Remember the essential goodness of humanity Think about your death Upcoming deadlines Moodle Discussion Forum due 11/15/2024 Journal #2 (Stress Management/Communication) due 11/20/2024 Beck Depression Inventory due 11/20/2024 Self-Evaluation of Nurturing Contract due 12/4/2024 Important Dates Test #4 on 11/27/2024 Thanksgiving Break 11/29/24 to 11/30/24 Final Exam on 12/11/2024 at 1600-1750
