# ENGLISH: 0 ## Chapter 1 * **Palpable:** Obvious and very noticeable * **Unison:** Do something together * **Transgression:** Doing something wrong * **Defiant:** Showing disobedience * **Ritual:** A ceremony. * **Pondered:** Think about something. * **Apprehensive:** Feeling unsure. * Jonas was feeling apprehensive. * The aircraft was unidentified and had overflown. * The sleek jet fascinated him but it was against the rules to fly over the community. * Supplies usually land with cargo planes. * The plane was usually squat, fat-bellied, but now it was a needle-nosed single-pilot jet. * The silent community caused stomach churn. - Parents were both at work. Lily was at the Childcare Centre. - The busy afternoon crew included Street Cleaners, Landscape Workers, and Food Delivery people. - Jonas was frightened - Jonas was **released**, which was a terrible punishment. It was an overwhelming statement of failure. - Jonas was released for Asher's **dumsy** error, losing a match. - Jonas sat aside for a brief and serious talk. The committee of Elders is also important. * Citizens **forget** about important matters. * Elder **Pleaders** of the community. * Children must remove hair ribbons at nine years old. * Children start experiencing touching bicycles and races, building toy vehicles and buildings with construction sets. * The **Elders** watch **Farmers** and other **Elevens**. * Training for adult life begins at the **Hall of Open Records**. * There are no volunteer hours, no recreation hours, and friends cannot be made at eight years old. * There are no **comfort** objects at eight years old. ## Chapter 3 * **Character development:** * Jonas had funny eyes, lighter eyes than Lily's (female five's). * There weren't many mirrors. * Gabe's comfort object was the hippo. * Gabe hopes to be a Birthmother. * Lily hopes to be a Birthmother. * Ten-year-old Natasha lives around the corner. She spends volunteer hours at the Birth Centre. * Lily believes Lily should be assigned as a **Speaker**. * Jonas believes Lily should be the **Assignment** as **Speaker**. * Lily didn't neatly tie her hair ribbons. They are undone and dangling. * ***Apple incident*** - The apple was removed from the Recreation area. - It was against the rules to hoard snacks, not eat them. - Jonas apologized to the Recreation Director. - Jonas threw the apple with Asher. - The apple was not a perfect sphere anymore. It was a different shade. The apple was the same shade as Jonas's tunic. - This happened four times. - Jonas held a magnifying glass to the apple. The apple was bruised. - The apple was in the house/dwelling - **Quiet, reflective** - A **time for renewal** and **preparation** for the day to come. * **Pale, Solemn, Knowing Eyes of Gabriel** * **Rules and Settings:** - Almost everyone had dark eyes. Jonas's eyes were lighter. - The lighter eyes were rare but gave people with lighter eyes a certain look and made them stand out. - Mirrors were not forbidden, Jonas didn't bother. - Jonas could be called in for **chastisement**. - There wasn't much honour for Birthmothers. - Birthmothers are given wonderful food, have gentle exercise periods, play games to amuse themselves, and give birth to three children. - Then they become **Labourers** for the **rest of their adult lives**. They enter the **House of Old** and do physical labor. - **Volunteers** had to do volunteer hours when they were eight. - **Speakers** sat in their office with the microphone all day. - They publicly announce that things were done wrong. - They are against taking things from the Recreation area. - The community values **stability and sameness**. - The citizens feared the consequences that came with **non-conformity**. - The community has a **collective loss of identity**. ## Chapter 4 * **Character development:** - Asher **fooled around** and made serious work difficult. - Benjamin has done his entire **nearly-four** years in the Rehabilitation Centre. - Benjamin is **rumored** to be skilled at developing machines and methods to hasten the rehabilitation process. - Jonas was impressed by the way Benjamin **graspates** things. - Nametags were on bicycles - Leaning a bicycle **House of the Old** - **Fiona** - Jonas liked her. She is a good student, polite, quiet, and has a sense of fun. - One kid did not complete the required number of volunteer hours, and they were given an **assignment** privately. - Roberto was **celebrated** for his release. - The Old were sitting quietly. Some were visiting, some were talking, and some were doing handicrafts. - Each room was comfortably furnished, but the carpeting was thick and the place was quiet. - Fiona saw a woman with cloudy and blank eyes, but she was blind. - Fiona gently washed an old man in warm water. - Soothing water mixed with fragile skin creates a slippery feeling from gentle motion. - Jonas liked the **expression** of trust he observed when they left the room. - Edina was a **Birthmother** who worked in food production. Edina had never had a family. - Roberto was an **Instructor** of **Elevens**. He has been on the planning committee for a long time. He has raised two children. - Children were **thrilled** when released. - Successful children helped with the design of the central plaza. - They named the anthem. * **Rules & Setting:** - People have the freedom to chose their volunteer hours, but they are carefully regulated. - People do jobs according to their skill and interest. - They start off by doing volunteer hours at **Recreation Party** first. - People cannot talk about someone's success without breaking the rule. - People who break the rules against bragging are **punished with** minor **chastisement**. - **Childcare Centre** - Lily. - **Central Plaza** - the large Auditorium where the public meetings are held. - **Ceremonies** are public meetings. - ***Nurturing Centre, Food production.*** - A **sign-up** sheet was used. - The sheet had an **official seal** and a **signature**. - There was a young uniformed man working as a **caretaker**. - The air was **warm** and **moist**. - It smelled of **cleansing lotion**. - It was against the rules to look at another's **nakedness** (*except the **Old** and **new children**)*. - People could discuss life **before** they were **released** with others but only the **committee**. - People know where people go when they are released (*except the **committee***). - People who were released left through the **Special Door** in the **Releasing Room**. - Don't let the children go into the releasing room. ## Chapter 5 * **Character development:** - People rarely dreamt. - Lily dreamt of riding her mother's bicycle and being caught by the Security Guards. - Lily dreamt of being at the **House of the Old** with Jonas. - Jonas took off his tunic. Jonas was with Fiona. - Jonas convinced Fiona to get into the tub of water at the **House of the Old**. - Jonas wanted to bathe Fiona. He wanted to do it terribly. * **First Stirrings:** - Jonas felt miserable when he thought he had to go somewhere for treatment - His mother reassured him and was affectionate - Jonas believes that **Stirrings** would come back if he didn't take the pill. - Jonas noticed that **Asher** took pills. (Asher likes the same things as Jonas). - Jonas felt **oddly proud** to take the pill. - Jonas liked the feeling and wanted to feel it again. - **Stirrings** were gone. * **Rules and Setting:** - Children had to **tell all** of their dreams every morning. - Dream telling started at three years old. - New children's dreams were never known. - The **Book of Rules** made reference to the Stirrings. - Children had to go to the **Treatment Centre** to take the Pill. - Children had to take the pill every morning until they entered the **House of the Old**. - The Stirrings will come back, but with adjustments to their dosage. ## Chapter 6 * **Character development:** - Jonas tried to tie Lily's hair - Lily wants Jonas to be a **Pilot**. - Jonas told Lily he would take her up "maybe twenty thousand feet, open the door, and --" - Jonas sat on the back of his mother's bicycle. - The child on his father's lap was not **Gabriel**. - Gabriel was given an unusual and special **reprieve** from the committee. Gabriel was granted an additional year of **nurturing** before his naming and placement. - Gabriel was **not yet** sleeping soundly, - Jonas's father made a plea for Gabriel. - Jonas's father would be labeled "**Uncertain**." - His father had not had to release a newchild this year. - If it had been a newchild and they had been released, there would have been failure and sadness. - Asher's sister is called **Phillipa.** - Fiona and Thea were waiting for their parents to **receive** newchildren. - Fiona and Thea were missing. - Fiona's brother was called **Bruno**. - **Caleb** was the **replacement child**. - Losing a child was very, very rare. - The community was extremely safe and everyone was watchful and protective of all children. - Caleb fell into the river. - During the ceremony of **Lass**, Caleb's name was murmured throughout the entire day. - The murmuring became less frequent, softer in volume, and like it was fading away. - During the **Murmur-Of-Replacement Ceremony**, Caleb's name was repeated softly. - The volume increased as if Caleb were returning. - There was another child named **Roberto.** - Midday meal. - Eights: **Lily!!!** - Day 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, M-D-R - DAYE TWO: 3 ## Chapter 7 * **Character Development:** - Children sat in front, arranged in their original number. - Jonas was number 1119. - Jonas was standing during the Naming. - When Jonas was standing, his walking and talking gave him an advantage. - It showed he had more maturity. - Jonas exchanged smiles with the new one, there was a shy female named **Hamiet**. - Asher was 4 (114), - Fiona was 18 (1118). Jonas was to Fiona's left. - Pierre was 20 (1120). Jonas didn't like Pierre very much. Pierre was very serious, a worrier, and a tattletale. - The Chief Elder was elected every ten years. - The speech given by the Chief Elder was the same. - This speech was a recollection of childhood. - It was a period of preparation for the coming responsibilities of adult life. - It was a time of importance to remember the Assignment and the seriousness of training to come. - During the **Eleven** stage, children learn to fit in. - They learn to standardize their behavior to cure any impulse that might set them apart from the group. - **Fiona** was assigned to the group with unusual scientific aptitudes and was meant to do physical labor. - **One:** Madeline. - **Madeline** was assigned to the Fish Hatchery. She was an Attendant. - **Two**: Inger. - **Inger** was a Birthmother. - Inger was lazy, but her body was strong and she used her strength to keep herself healthy. - **K THREE**: ISAAC - **Isaac** was an Instructor of **Sixes**. - Isaac pleased Asher. - Asher was **nervous**, as the group leader. - Asher gave Isaac a **silent assessment**. - Asher did not consider himself as an Instructor of the Threes. - They were **Snack and Smack** - They were **Childcare Specialists** (trained to). - They were **eager** for their juice. - Asher said **Smock** instead of **snack**. - He said **I WANT MY SMACK!**. - Precision of language is important. - They had a discipline wand. - The wand was used to hit people's hands. - Isaac stopped talking, but he was very precise with corrections and apologies. - Isaac prompted with good humour. - Isaac was **unfailing** in his efforts. - Isaac was the **Assistant Director of Recreation**. - Isaac said **Thank you for your childhood**. - Fiona was calm and the caretaker of the old. ## Chapter 8 * **Character development:** - There was a sudden hush. - Jonas felt dizzy and dazed as they moved into the Thirties and Forties. - He had wild thoughts. - He was embarrassed. - Jonas had a worried look and he was the group leader. - He wanted to disappear. - Jonas hunched his shoulders and tried to make himself smaller. - He wanted to disappear and faded away. - He didn't want to see his parents’ faces darken with shame. * **Rules & Setting:** - Children rarely used their original number after Naming. - Parents would use a child's original number when the child misbehaved. - This indicated that he was unworthy of a name. - You could usually tell who was a few months older than other children in their group by the first number. - Children were not allowed to open their tunics. - It was a day with a breeze, and most children had taken a brief ride on a friend's bicycle. - The Instructors of Threes were in charge of helping children acquire the correct language. - A regulated system of **smacks** was used for punishing small children. - A **discipline wand** was a thin and flexible weapon that stung painfully when it was wielded. - Childcare specialists were carefully trained for their work. They used discipline methods. - A quick smack on the hands was used for minor misbehavior. - Three sharp smacks on the bare legs were used for a second offense. - Childcare workers were included in this. - "**Chief Elder makes no mistakes**?" - "What did he do wrong?". ## Chapter 9 * **Character development:** - Jonas felt **separate** and **different**. - Jonas felt **apartness** but also familiarity. - He had a **moment of hesitation**. - Asher greeted Jonas with his usual **smile**. - Asher was friendly and familiar. - Jonas hesitated. - There was hesitation from someone, too. - Lily was watching Jonas **solemnly**. - Lily had her thumb in her mouth. - Lily wanted to go to the Nurturing Centre. - Jonas felt **greatly honored** and **proud**. - **Failed Selection!** - Both Jonas and the Father **hesitated** as they discussed the previous selection. - The **Father** described the previous selection. - The **previous selection** was a **female**. - Jonas never saw her again. - The **sheet** read "Greatly Honored" - When the sheet was read, Jonas’ tone was **nervous**, but he tried to comfort Jonas. - **Jonas** was told 1. To go to the Annexe entrance behind Ho-to to present himself. 2. To go to his dwelling immediately after the conclusion of his Training Hours. 3. He had **no time** for recreation, as his schedule was filled to the brim. 4. He was **exempted** from rules that governed rudeness. 5. He **could ask any citizen a question** about anything, and these citizens would answer his questions. 6. Jonas was accustomed to courtesy within the community. 7. Jonas **thought of asking citizens intimate questions**. 8. Jonas was unnerving to others. 9. Jonas couldn’t discuss his training with anyone, including parents and Elders. 10. Jonas was prohibited from **dream-telling**. 11. This wasn't really a problem as Jonas rarely dreamed. 12. Jonas was glad to be excused. 13. There was the question of how to handle a request to eat during morning meal, if it wasn't related to training. 14. Jonas would have to **lie**. 15. Jonas crushed his finger on the door. 16. His mother hastily requested a **relief of pain medication**. 17. The pain was excruciating but it diminished to a throb. 18. Jonas was able to take the **medication** if it wasn't related to training. 19. Jonas was not permitted to apply for release. 20. Jonas believed that would never happen to him under any circumstances. 21. Jonas was allowed to lie. 22. Jonas had been trained to **never lie** since his earliest learning of language. 23. This was an **integral part** of the training. 24. Jonas started crying when he was four years old. 25. He had **private lessons** in language precision. 26. The precision of language was to make sure that unintentional lies were never uttered. 27. This was to understand intelligence. 28. Jonas wondered if other Twelves also had his same **terrifying sentences**. 29. Jonas could rudely ask adults "Do you **lie**?". 30. Jonas couldn’t figure out if he was a **liar** because they never let you know if it was true. 31. Children were to go home after the ceremony to study instructions for the beginning of their training. 32. Their father gave a warning glance to Lily. 33. Children were not supposed to know **Gabe's name**. 34. You shouldn't use **Gabe's name** in the Failed Election. 35. The name for a new child. 36. The name "Not-to-Be-Spoken" was the highest level of disgrace.
