(The story of the negotiations) ## عبد الرحمن عارف - He ruled after his brother Abd Al-Salam’s death; their rule was called “The Rule of the Brothers” - He served as an officer in the Iraqi military. - He took over in 1966 and was deposed in a bloodless coup in 1968 - He was kept under house arrest at the Republican Palace in 1968 - He surrendered in exchange for his own safety and that of his son, who also served as an officer, and was exiled to Istanbul. He returned to Baghdad in the eighties. ## أحمد الحسن البكر - He ruled Iraq from 1968 to 1979. He was a member of the Ba’ath Party - He had served as an Iraqi army officer. The Silent Crisis with Kuwait in ‎ 1973 happened during his reign. - He was overthrown by his deputy, Saddam Hussein, who was becoming increasingly powerful. ## صدام حسين - He held Iraq in an iron fist from 1979 after removing Ahmad al-Hassan al-Bakr. - He contributed to the outbreak of the Iraqi - Iranian war in 1980 and it lasted for eight years. Kuwait and other Gulf states helped Iraq. - He invaded and occupied Kuwait on the 2nd of August 1990. This was a crime of the century.
