11 August 2006 - Sludge has washed up on Panay, Island as an oil spill from a sunken tanker spread, an average of 100-200 litres of oil continued to gush every hour. 1893 Ms7.3 Monkayo historical earthquake killed several hundreds and caused massive landslides, realignment of riverways, and the destruction of farms in Monkayo, Compostela Valley Province. 1976 Moro Gulf Earthquake is the strongest earthquake recorded in the Philippines with magnitude 8. 1990 Bohol earthquake inducing tsunami has a thrust fault movement with magnitude 6.8. 2012 PANTUKAN LANDSLIDE. In Compostela Valley, a small-scale mining site has buried dozens of houses and killed 42 people in the province. Heavy rain and mild earthquake occurs in Pantukan. 2018 Itogon Landslide: Sept. 15, 2018 / Itogon, Benguet / Landslide from closed mine due to continuous raining by Typhoon Ompong / 94 casualties. 2018 Naga Cebu Landslide—Limestone and soil on the mountainside softened due to heavy monsoon rains and triggered a landslide and led to a death toll of 29. 2019 Ms 6.3 Cotabato Earthquake: Oct. 31, 2019 / Tulunan, Cotabato / Ms 6.3 / Strike-Slip fault / Intensity VII. 2020 Mw 6.3 Batangas Earthquake, Highest Instrumental Intensity is Intensity IV, but reached Intensity VI in reported intensities. 2021 Mw 5.5 Occidental Mindoro Earthquake, Considered as one of the strongest earthquakes in the Philippines. A ferry name MV Princess of the Stars with 851 passengers sank due to Severe Tropical Storm Fengshen. 32 Survived, 200 bodies were found and the rest are missing. A flash flood occurred at Banaue, Ifugao on July 7, 2022 due to heavy rains accompanied by strong winds. A landslide caused by typhoon Frank in June 21, 2008 caused a temporary damming in the upstream portion of the Aklan river aggravating the resultant flash flood event leading to 1 death. A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Castillejos, Zambales on April 22, 2019. A total of 18 dead, 256 injured, and 3 missing persons were reported in Regions III and NCR. A magnitude 6.9 earthquake generated by a thrust fault movement shook the islands of Negros, Cebu, and nearby islands of Western Visayas on February 6, 2012; its epicenter is located in Tayasan, Negros Oriental. Around 48,000 liters of oil spilled into waters off Iloilo on July 3, 2020 after an explosion at a power barge owned by AC Energy. Authorities estimate an area of around 1,200 square meters are affected. August 31, 2012 Samar Earthquake. Epicenter is located at coast of Eastern Samar. The 7.6-magnitude 2012 Samar Earthquake only killed 1 person and injured 2 individuals. Close to 100 sinkholes have been discovered in nine towns and one city in Bohol after the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that shook the province on Oct. 15, 2013. February 10, 2017 a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the Province of Surigao del Norte in northeastern Mindanao this earthquake generated a 4.3 km surface-rupture encompassing 4 barangays. Fissures / Sinkholes formed in Taal, Batangas as a result of the Taal Volcano Eruption and the effects of the July 24, 2021 magnitude 6.6 earthquake. In 1754, Taal volcano had its greatest recorded eruption which lasted for 7 months. In 2020, Philippine environmental secretary Roy Cimatu raided and ordered the closure of illegal small-scale gold mine in Mt. Apo, which threatened the ancestral domain of the Manobo" In December 2005, an oil barge of the National Power Corp. sank off the shore of Semirara in Antique, spilling almost 200,000 liters of oil and contaminating about 40 square km of water off Semirara. In December 2014, Catbalogan, Samar was hit by Typhoon Seniang that caused the instability of soil resulting in a landslide killing at least 20 people and five barangays were devastated. In March of 2012, the Nicua Mining Corporation was responsible for a massive fish kill in Macarthur, Leyte. The company was reported to have released mining waste into Lake Bito, killing 22 tons of fish. In modern meteorological records, the deadliest overall tropical cyclone to affect the Philippines is Yolanda in 2013. In October 22, 2015 a 20 meter wide sinkhole opened in Itogon, Benguet, caused by the fractures left by 1990 Luzon earthquake and the dissolution of limestone caused by Typhoon Lando. In the morning of December 4, 1951, Hibok-Hibok volcano in Camiguin erupted. The volcano unleashed boiling lava,poisonous gases, and landslides. All in all, over 3,000 people were killed. This eruption made the nation realize the necessity to seriously monitor and conduct studies on active volcanoes in the country. Magnitude 6.9 -Davao Del Sur Earthquake, December 15, 2019. Magnitude 7.8 earthquake strikes Baguio City, July 16, 1990 killing 1621 people. Moro Gulf earthquake - generated 9 meters of waves which hit the islands of Sulu. Mount Bulusan, Sorsogon Province phreatic eruption on June 5, 2022. National authorities reported that 418 people have been evacuated and 16,400 were affected. Mt. Mayon's most destructive eruption happened on February 1, 1814 which killed 1,200 people. The Plinian eruption in Albay generated pyroclastic flows, volcanic lightning, and lahar bomb. October 14-16, 2021 Camarines Sur, experienced series of earthquake that the DOST- considered as "Earthquake Swarm." A total of 21 earthquakes were recorded with magnitude range of 4.3 to 2.0 with shallow depths ranging from 1 to 34 km. On August 27 and September 11, 2002, the spillway of Bayarong tailings dam of Dizon Copper Silver Mines Inc. in San Marcelino, Zambales collapsed during heavy rain. On Dec 21, 2020 a mining pit owned by Carmen Copper Corporation collapsed, recording 4 fatalities and 6 missing people. On December 12, 1999, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake occured just off the coast of the Zambales-Pangasinan Area. On January 12, 2021, Taal Volcano erupted and it had a phreatomagmatic type of explosion. On July 27, 2019, 3 earthquakes occurred north of Itbayat, Batanes with magnitudes ranging from 5.4 to 5.9 and intensities ranging from III to VII. On July 27, 2022, a 7.0 major magnitude shock the northwestern Abra and adjacing areas in Metro Manila. Its epicenter is located in Tayum Abra. On March 1 2013, a landslide incident occured at Mahiao Project of Energy Development Coorperation (EDC) in Kananga, Leyte. The landslide debris fell from the mountain top onto 45 workers resulting in 12 fatalities. On the night of August 2, 1999, a massive landslide occurred in Cherry Hills subdivision in Antipolo, Rizal province, Philippines. One of the most iconic pictures of the 1990 Luzon Earthquake's aftermath is the toppled Hyatt Terraces Hotel in Baguio City. Pampanga experienced the most damage during the 2019 6.1 magnitude earthquake because it was overlaid by soft sediments. Panaon Island, Southern Leyte landslides (December 15-22, 2003) result of occurence of continuous heavy rains causing 3 successive landslides leaving more than 154 people dead. The 1871 Hibok-Hibok eruption caused the community cemetery to be sunk under the sea - now a tourist attraction named Sunken Cemetery - and the formation of Mt. Vulcan, a lava dome on the NW flank of Hibok-Hibok volcano. The 1990 Panay Earthquake with magnitude of 7.1Ms is a strike slip faulting movement in the collisional zone of Western Panay. The 1994 Mindoro earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1 that occured on November 17, 1994 near Mindoro. The earthquake generated a tsunami and landslides on the Verde Island. The 2016 Mt. Kanlaon eruption was classified as phreatic eruption. The magnitude 6.2 Masbate earthquake during the year 2003 had a Ms 5.2 foreshock and a total of 187 aftershocks. The second-largest volcanic eruption of this century, and by far the largest eruption to affect a densely populated area, occurred at Mount Pinatubo on June 15, 1991. The sulfuric gas emitted by Taal Volcano increased in the beginning of August 2022 causing volcanic smog or vog over the taal caldera.
