Diabetes Pathophysiology KAREN S. FIANO, PHARM.D., BCACP ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR ASSISTANT DEAN, ACCREDITATION & ASSESSMENT EMAIL: [email protected] Lecture Objectives Define the terms glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, glycogenesis, glycogenolysis, lipogenesis, lipolysis, ketogenesis, and receptors involved in glucose uptake throughout the body (GLUT receptor family). Describe insulin synthesis and identify the main physiologic factors that regulate insulin release. Identify the major physiologic actions of insulin and glucagon in regulating blood glucose levels. Compare and contrast the pathophysiologic events resulting in Type 1 (T1DM) and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). What is Diabetes Mellitus? Diabetes Mellitus Overview Type 1 diabetes mellitus Characterized by inability of the body to regulate blood glucose levels Results in high blood glucose = hyperglycemia Type 2 diabetes mellitus Gestational diabetes mellitus Monogenic diabetes in youth (MODY) In the United States, about 11.3% of the population aged 18 or older has diabetes (37.3 million), representing 14.7% of all U.S. adults. Types of diabetes mellitus Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) - ~5% of total Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) – ~94% of total Other types of diabetes (
