This would mean that counselors should tailor-fit all theircounselingplans based on the client’sissueandbackground.Evenwhentwoclientsarediagnosedwiththe same condition, they must still be given different treatment plans because they are two distinctpeoplewhofunctionandadaptindifferentways. As such, a counselor should conduct a needs assessment. It is ideal that the same counselor conducts the intake and assessment, plans and facilitates the treatment, and continues the follow-up. According to the American Counseling Association, it is an evaluative and objectiveprocessofdatagatheringandinterpretationthatfocusesondeterminingspecific programs and services for clients. In facilitating a needs assessment among groups, a counselormustfollowamethodwithfourdistinctsteps: Identifyingguidingquestionsandgoals(goalsetting) In this stage, counselors work with clients to understand group culture, challenges and issues, strengths, and dynamics—all of which would eventually help in formulatingspecificgoalsandquestions. In addition, it may be assumed that the community leaders are aware of the community’s specific needs. It is also important to remember that community needs differ from the group and individual needs because a community is made up of a larger population.
