According to Robert Havinghurst, a developmental task is one that arises predictably and consistently at or about a certain period in the life of the individual (Havighurst, 1948 and 1953). Learning is a continuous process through life “starts from the womb and ends in the tomb” He writes, “A developmental-task is the midway between an individual need and a social demand. It assumes an active learner interacting with an active social environment”. Havighurst considered the many different aspects of a person’s life that influence a person’s development which are as follows: Biological development Society Personal characteristics According to Havighurst, there are sensitive periods which he called teachable moments, when an individual is mature enough to learn the developmental tasks. These tasks may be physical like walking, cognitive like learning to read, or social where the person develops significant relationships. Once the critical period of development is over, learning may still occur. Havighurst added that biology and society have a lot influence, but personal values of the people who prepare them have as much influences on identifying the task. Stages of Development (Havighurst) Infancy & early childhood (Birth till 6) Middle childhood (6-12) Adolescence (13-18) Early Adulthood (19-30) Middle Age (30-60) Later maturity (60 and over) Sources of Developmental Tasks First, some tasks are mainly based on physical maturation example, learning to walk, talk, and behave acceptably with the opposite sex during adolescence; adjusting to menopause during middle age. Sources of Developmental Tasks Another source of developmental tasks involves personal values and aspirations. These personal factors result from the interaction between ontogenetic and environmental factors, and play an active role in the emergence of specific developmental tasks (example, choosing a certain occupational pathway). Sources of Developmental Tasks The third source of developmental tasks relates to socio-structural and cultural forces. Such influences are based on, for instance, laws (example, minimum age for marriage) and culturally shared expectations of development. Developmental Task Summary Table Developmental Task Summary Table Activity How would you define Responsibility? What is an obligation? What is a community? As a grade 12 student, what are your responsibilities at home? In School? In the community? Responsibility - the state or fact of having a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone. Obligation - an act or course of action to which a person is morally or legally bound; a duty or commitment. “An obligation is a juridical necessity to give, to do or not to do.” (1) Law; (2) Contracts; (3) Quasi-contracts; (4) Acts or omissions punished by law; and (5) Quasi-delicts. Civil Code of the PhilippinesArt. 1158. Obligations derived from law are not presumed. Only those expressly determined in this Code or in special laws are demandable, and shall be regulated by the precepts of the law which establishes them; and as to what has not been foreseen, by the provisions of this Book. Responsibility vs Obligation Obligation is something which you are compelled to do because of some rules and regulations, agreements or contracts. It may arise from some kind of legalities. Whereas Responsibility is the incidence of something which you feel like doing owing to moral reasons. It is not binding upon you to discharge the responsibility. Guide Questions What was the clip all about? How would you view responsibility and obligation in relation to the Old man? To the Doctor?
