Day 1: A few important things to know about Upper School at TAS This (relatively) quick overview of a few things… This is a quick summary and does not include EVERY school rule or community guideline. Please read the upper school handbook! (online and in Week Ahead) Talk with your advisor, your teachers, Dr. Fagen, or Dr. Chen if you have any questions 8/12/2024 3 "Rules" are really "Community Agreements" Being a Part of a Community.... We are a school community! Part of being in a community is that we have a shared understanding of how we participate and engage with one another in this shared space. Each community has a set of agreements that they abide by – families, churches, temples, supermarkets, workplaces, etc. Community agreements help groups move towards a common purpose, and they help everyone to feel safe and comfortable at school. TAS is a big place! We are not just upper schoolers, but we cross paths with and interact with lower and middle schoolers, faculty, staff, support staff...and because of this we really all need to work together. Shared Upper School Spaces We have awesome spaces! Enjoy the spaces and handle them with care and respect. Places to eat! Legacy commons, US courtyard, out by the track More Places to eat! Skybridge to the Tech Cube, By the Fitness Cafe Bringing Food from Fitness Café downstairs MUST walk directly from Fitness Café to outdoor staircase by World Languages Department and walk directly to cafeteria or outdoor eating area. Please do not eat while you walk. Please do not walk through the academic building – you need to use the outdoor stairs. Places NOT to eat! Classrooms Hallways Locker rooms and Bathrooms (yuck) Please do not wait for Library an adult to "catch" Tech Cube you...work together and make sure you are Indoor couches and eating in an approved tables in any Upper area. School building "Why can't we eat in those places?" Taking care of our spaces and surroundings (spilling, germs, disinfecting areas, etc) Bugs, critters and more! We're serious. They are around... You cannot have food, drink, or anything else delivered to TAS. You will see grade 12 students with approved off campus lunch privileges can have food delivered to the sidewalk outside of school (not to the gate or guardhouse). Gr. 9, 10 and 11 students may not have food or drinks or anything else delivered to campus. Drinks need to be in a reusable bottle Bring a reusable bottle to school every day. 8/12/2024 13 Places to hang out, study & chill! Please ask them! Campus Hours Mon – Fri : 7:00 am – 7:00 pm Sat & Sun : 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. After 3:35, you must stay in approved areas with adult supervision at all times. Your personal items (backpacks, computers, etc) It is quite tempting to leave your items laying around unattended and unlocked. Sadly, there is theft at TAS - you MUST keep your items with you and/or lock up your items in a locker "Why shouldn't I leave my stuff around?" Your items are your responsibility. It isn't fair (or thoughtful or kind) to leave stuff in an area to "save it" while you go off to eat or something. These are shared spaces, and you using them is a privilege, not a right. THEFT HAPPENS! Do not leave any personal items laying around any table, classroom, locker room...anywhere! 8/12/2024 24 So, in summary: Keep your items with you at all times or lock up your items in a locker assigned to you. Stop by and see Ms. Hsu in the US Office to sign up for a locker in H block. (Info in the Week Ahead) Always keep your H block and PE Lockers Locked! Do not share your combination, and do not use others' lockers. 8/12/2024 25 How to know what's going on! Required reading: 1. Canvas – class assignments! 2. Exceptions can be made for serious illness, family emergencies, etc. These can only be made by talking with your counselor who will work with administration. Reach out directly to your grade level counselor if you have questions about attendance. Important Attendance Guidelines If you are marked absent, you cannot be on campus. Once you return to campus you must sign in at the US Office. If you are absent for any part of the school day, you must receive admin approval to attend after-school activities. Email Dr. Fagen (Gr 10, 12) or Dr. Chen (Gr 9, 11) Questions? Reach out to your counselor, teacher, or associate principal. Planned Absences, Listen Up! Planned Absences: If you have a doctor's appointment, or some event that will mean you will miss part of a school day, a parent or guardian must contact the school via email or by phone or fill out an absence form on PowerSchool Parent Portal. If you know you will be absent from school (for an entire school day or more) for a non-TAS reason/event, it is your responsibility to fill out a PLANNED ABSENCE form 3-5 days BEFORE you plan to leave. If your family wants to request an extended absence (more than 3 days), they must contact the upper school principal for approval. "Where is the planned absence form?" On the student portal of the TAS website – you can print it off. OR...You can pick up a paper copy in the upper school office. Introducing Wellness Days Based on feedback from Class Officers and community members, TAS will implement Wellness Days for upper school students. Each student can take 1 Wellness Day per semester. Wellness days must be 1 entire school day (cannot take select periods off. Students that take a Wellness Day must remain off campus the entire school day. Students that take a Wellness Day can attend after school activities. Wellness days count as an absence so are counted as part of the 8 total max absences per class per semester. 8/12/2024 32 "How do I take a Wellness Day?" Talk with your family. They can contact the school like they would for a sick day, and instead input "Wellness Day" via the PowerSchool Parent Portal, or a phone call to the Upper School Office. 8/12/2024 33 Emergency Drills & Evacuation Procedures 1 – Earthquake Drill 2 – Fire Drill (school evacuation) 3 - Code Red Drill Earthquake Drill Procedure ✓ Get under a desk, table counter. ✓ Drop to your knees, backs to windows. Clasp hands firmly behind your head, covering your necks. Bury your face in arms. If you are outdoors, move away from buildings. Once in the open, lie on the ground until shaking stops. Do not run through or near buildings. Evacuation Procedure ✓ SILENTLY evacuate the building towards the Lower Field. Follow your teacher’s directive on how to evacuate the building from your classroom. ✓ Leave your belongings behind. Line up with your advisory group on the Lower Field. Code Red Procedure In the event of a violent situation on campus, our school will initiate a “Code Red” lockdown procedure, and we practice this drill each year. ✓ Move to and remain in the nearest secure, locked location. ✓ Lock all doors and cover windows. Turn off lights. ✓ Stay away from doors and windows as to not be seen. Remain calm and silent. ✓ Upon hearing the all-clear announcement, resume normal activity. Ok! Now follow your advisor out to the lower field to see your evacuation row# and then head to the US Gym for assembly. 8/12/2024 39
