Snakebite Envenoming : Notifiable Disease Under The Tamil Nadu Public Health Act, 1939 ▪ The Tamil Nadu government has officially declared snakebite envenomation as a notifiable disease under the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act, 1939. ▪ Notifiable disease - In India, registered medical practitioners must report notifiable diseases to the government within three days, or verbally within 24 hours. Failure to report a notifiable disease is a criminal offense. ▪ Some examples of notifiable diseases include: AIDS, Cholera, Dengue fever, Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, B, and C, Influenza, Leprosy, Malaria, Measles, and Tuberculosis ▪ The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognised snakebite as a global public health issue and launched a strategy to reduce snakebite-induced deaths and disabilities worldwide. ▪ National Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Snakebite Envenoming - aims to halve snakebite deaths by 2030 through a ‘One Health’ approach, integrating human, animal, and environmental health interventions In Assam’s Goalpara district, a unique initiative called “Comics Commandos” has been launched ▪ to combat child labour and child marriage using grassroots comics. ▪ 30 local youths trained to create comic strips with minimum text and humour for better public engagement.
