Shastri ji joined the Indian Independence Struggle in the 1920s, where he took part in the non- cooperation movement. The British sent him to prison for a while. He took part in the Salt Satyagraha in 1930, which led to his more than two-year imprisonment. He joined as the Parliamentary Board of U.P.'s organizing secretary in 1937. National Youth Day: 12th January National Youth Day 2024 is observed on the 12th January 2024. On January 12, 1984, the Indian government declared Swami Vivekananda's birthday as National Youth Day for the first time. Since then, the day is celebrated nationwide as National Youth Day. The MTHL project is 22 km long, touted to be India's longest and the world's 12 longest sea bridge. The project consists of an approximately 22 km long 6-tier (3+3-lane, 2 emergency lane) bridge connecting Shivdi in Mumbai city and Nhava on the mainland. Build at the cost of ₹17,843 crore, the six-lane bridge is among the most expensive projects. The MTHL will have interchanges at Sewri in Mumbai and Shivaji Nagar, Jassi, and Chirle on National Highway 4B on the Navi Mumbai end. Bharatmala Phase 1 deadline extended by six years to FY28t The government has recently extended the deadline for completion of the highway development project Bharatmala Phase-I to 2027-28. Bharatmala Pariyojana is a centrally-sponsored project, approved by Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) in 2017. It was to be completed by 2022 to enhance road connectivity and facilitate economic growth by constructing and upgrading highways across India. The Cabinet Committee had approved the first phase of Bharatmala Pariyojana in 2017 and was to cost Rs 5.35 trillion. VP Jagdeep Dhankhar to inaugurate Startup Expo in Kathua Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar will inaugurate the Startup Expo in Kathua. Twenty-five startups from Northern States will showcase their products at the expo. Six women Entrepreneurs will also participate in the startup expo. FinMin allows 30th tranche of electoral bonds The Centre has approved the issuance of the 30th tranche of electoral bonds that will open for sale. The window for purchase and encashment of electoral bonds will be available till January 11. Electoral bonds have been pitched as an alternative to cash donations made to political parties as part of efforts to bring transparency to political funding. The sale of the first batch of electoral bonds happened in March 2018. The latest window — the 30th tranche —comes ahead of the general elections due later this year. India to become world’s largest metallurgical coal importer by 2026 India will become the largest metallurgical coal importer in the world by 2026. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global metallurgical coal trade will increase by about 2% to 353 million tonnes (MT) in 2026. Rise in India’s metallurgical coal imports will be aided by growing industrialization, higher steel consumption and limited availability of coking coal. The IEA predicted that rising imports from other countries will balance off a decline in metallurgical coal imports into China of roughly 28 MT, or 28% compared to 2023. IEA said imports into India will increase by 2026, by 16 MT (or 21%). According to IEA, the global metallurgical coal imports are expected to have increased by about 11% y-o-y to 352 MT in 2023. Important Monthly Current Affairs Capsule – January 2024 The tenure of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Automobile and Auto Components has been extended by the government by one year with partial amendments. Under the amended scheme, the incentive would apply for five consecutive financial years, beginning from the financial year 2023-24 (FY24). The distribution of incentives will take place in the next financial year 2024-25. The scheme also clarifies that an approved applicant would be eligible for benefits for 5 consecutive financial years, but not more than the financial year ending March 31, 2028. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurates all-girls Sainik school in Mathura Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated India’s first all-girl Sainik School at Vrindavan in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. Samvid Gurukulam Girls Sainik School has been opened under the initiative of opening 100 new Sainik Schools in partnership mode with NGOs/private/state government schools in all states/union territories. Training at the CBSE-affiliated school will be given by ex-servicemen. It has a strength of around 870 students. The main objective behind opening 100 new Sainik Schools is to provide quality education to the students in tune with the National Education Policy (NEP). The inspiration for setting up the Sainik Schools came from the Royal Indian Military College (RIMC) and Royal Indian Military Schools. The Competition (Amendment) Act, 2023, inter alia, amended Section 27, 48 and Section 64 of the Act empowers the CCI to frame regulations for imposition of penalty on enterprise and/or person based on turnover or income of such enterprise and/or person. Under Section 27 of the Competition Act, 2002, the CCI can impose penalties on enterprises or individuals for participating in anti-competitive agreements or abusing a dominant position. Elevating Ayodhya Airport to international status is paramount for realizing Ayodhya's economic potential and its significance as a global pilgrimage site, opening doors to foreign pilgrims and tourists. The airport’s name, "Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhyadham," pays homage to Maharishi Valmiki, the sage attributed to composing the epic Ramayana, adding a cultural touch to the airport's identity. Cabinet approves signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and United States for International Development/India (USAID/India) for supporting Indian Railways to achieve Mission Net Zero Carbon Emission The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, was apprised of signing of Memorandum of Understanding between India and United States for International Development/India (USAID/India) for supporting Indian Railways to achieve Mission Net Zero Carbon Emission by 2030. The MoU provides a platform for Indian Railways to interact and share the latest developments and knowledge in the railway sector. Earlier, USAID/India had also worked with IR focused on deployment of rooftop solar across railway platforms. The proposed MoU covers the complete value chain of hydrocarbon sector including sourcing of crude oil from Guyana, participation of Indian companies in Exploration and Production (E&P) sector of Guyana, cooperation in the areas of crude Oil refining, capacity building, Strengthening bilateral trade, collaboration in natural gas sector, collaboration in developing regulatory policy framework in oil & gas sector in Guyana; Cooperation in the area of clean energy including biofuels as well as renewables sector including solar energy etc. Cabinet approves Memorandum of Understanding between Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC) concerning cooperation on the development of a Joint Small Satellite The Union Cabinet chaired by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was apprised of a Memorandum of Understanding signed at Port Louis, Mauritius between Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC) under the aegis of the Ministry of Information Technology, Communication, and Innovation of the Republic of Mauritius, concerning cooperation on the development of a Joint Small Satellite. Signing of this MoU shall enable the joint realisation of small satellite between ISRO and MRIC. The satellite realisation is proposed to be completed in 15 months’ time frame.
