Unit 5 Need-to-Know List You should know the following concepts: The Manhattan Project is the code name for the American-led effort to develop a functional atomic weapon during WWII. The war effort consisted of rations (limits on sugar, butter, etc), victory gardens, and carpooling to save on rubber and oil. The 1948 election had 3 candidates: Truman was the Democrat, Dewey was the Republican, and Thurmond was the Dixiecrat. Truman won the election. The Truman Doctrine sent $400,000 in economic aid to Turkey and Greece so they weren’t tempted to go to the USSR for support. The Taft-Hartley Act was a federal law that restricted the activities and power of labor unions and required union officers to sign affidavits with the government, promising that they were not communist. Anti-Japanese propaganda permeated American culture, even from official sources like the US War Office. Truman’s Fair Deal expanded social security and raised the minimum wage The Marshall Plan sent $13 billion in economic aid to other European countries to help them rebuild after WWII. Church attendance increased after WW2. Churchill came to the US and gave a speech called the “Sinews of Peace”. He declared that the USSR was drawing an “iron curtain” across eastern and western Europe. During this time period, the leader of the USSR was Joseph Stalin. Containment is the geopolitical foreign policy used by Truman and the United States against the Soviet Union which was meant to prevent the spread of Communism. In August of 1949, the USSR (Soviet Union) successfully tested its first atomic bomb. NATO (The North Atlantic Treaty Organization) encouraged economic and political cooperation between the countries involved, but did not involve the Soviet Union. You should be able to answer the following questions in 1 complete sentence each: Explain how Truman became the “Accidental President”. Explain 1 reason for the United States to drop the atomic bomb. Describe how black veterans were denied benefits of the GI Bill of Rights after WWII. Explain why the Dixiecrats split from the Democratic Party.
