The parent could be a father or a mother who provides financial, emotional and other basic support to the children. Parenting in itself for this type of structure is highly challenging as this may mean nobody shares the responsibility and accountability over taking care of the children and provide nurturance. TYPES OF FAMILY Single Parent Family There may be a need also to find someone to provide childcare when the solo parent is out to earn a living. Since only one may be earning a living, having more children means more financial demands, thus, the pressure to earn more or perhaps there is limited income to be able to sustain the needs of the children and the entire family. Some Adolescents with single parents have to get a part time job at food chains while studying. TYPES OF FAMILY Single Parent Family Solo-parent family can also be a choice. Factors like, separation and diseased spouse or partner are the most common reasons for a Single-Parent Family. Thus, its new family comprises of a husband, wife and children from previous marriages or relationships. Adolescents living in stepfamily arrangement may need more time to blend with members of the “other” family. TYPES OF FAMILY Step or Blended Family Parents play vital role in facilitating in harmonious relationship among meeting all the children from two marriages and discuss the plans for the entire “new family”. Familial kinship can be developed if two sets of children come together harmoniously. TYPES OF FAMILY Grandparent Family Is a type of family structure whose grandparents take the role of parenting and nurturing of a child or children. Commonly known as working-parents type of family too. There can be varied reasons, such as death of children’s parents, abandoned, unfit to provide parenting to children or both parents are working. Some parents have to go abroad or work very far to secure the financial needs of the family while entrusting the parenting to the grandparents. This can be very challenging for both parents and the grandparents since parenting styles may differ and its effect to the adolescent. There are couples who live together and have children as a common-law or domestic partners but are not legally married. They can be childless or may have a children on their own or children from there previous relationships. It goes beyond traditional family tree by allowing the user to see the dynamics within the family, visualize hereditary patterns and psychological factors that punctuate relationship or that has possibly affected human condition. This was developed and popularized by Monica McGoldrick and Randy Gerson in the middle of 1980s. This was used for their therapeutic work. A family as an emotional unit. This means that one’s behavior affects the other family member’s behavior in predictable ways. Families are systems of interconnected and interdependent individuals, and therefore, they cannot be understood apart from each other. How do you affect each of your family members? Family Influences The family is the very first social unit that a child is exposed to. From birth to adulthood, it is the family who provides care and nurturance. Thus, its influence on one’s attitude, values and beliefs are great. How does the family influence the adolescent? The family takes a significant role in the lives of the growing children. The home environment can either influence the child in positive or negative ways. By action and by example, parents shape the lives of their children. Socialization processes may also influence the family when members go out to other places. Friends and peers are also examples. Challenges and Issues Among Adolescents The storms and stress… Families from urban areas and rural areas may differ in family dynamics, according to Ramos (2017). While families are more traditional in the rural areas that follow mostly the extended family set-up for some, the urban families are more dynamic in terms of the parental upbringing, family structures and handling challenges. As these differ from family dynamics, family conflicts still center on the common issues such as financial difficulties, marital separation, violence and other family disputes, when adolescents witness these could be detrimental to the their development and become source of their family stressors, Ramos (2017), further explains. The influence remains when these conflicts are not resolved that will then lead to parent-adolescent conflicts. Although mostly, parent- adolescent conflicts may not necessarily come from family disputes. There are many factors that can contribute to parent-adolescent conflicts that may not dominantly come from family relationships alone. Not telling the truth Being disorganized Getting into trouble Sibling rivalry Too much time on gadgets Poor academic performance Teenage pregnancy Vices and addiction Career decisions Do you think that these common problems are behavioral in terms of peer pressure or there can be underlying problems that come with it? Sometimes, parents themselves get scared, angry, frustrated, or hopeless. These are normal reactions. Understanding what adolescents go through by both parties can help the situation and resolve existing conflicts. Teens should be treated with respect and parents should make them proud of their family. What should adolescents and their families do when facing common issues?
