WHO SUCCEEDED OSIAS? Gabino Tabuñar When President Osias was elected as senator, Gabino Tabuñar continued Osias's work. He was appointed as acting president and during his term he implemented progressive policies of Osias. Gabino Tabuñar Gabino Tabuñar Tabuñar was a government pensionado to the United States, earning his baccalaureate degree in Education at the University of Chicago and his master’s degree at Columbia University. He was a Division Superintendent of Antique at the Bureau of Education. NAtional University During Tabuñar’s Term Acting President Tabuñar implemented the progressive policies of Osias. Enrollment continued to increase; the three-story Science Building was constructed in 1931 and the old Annex Building was remodeled. It was during this period of remarkable growth for the university that Mariano F. Jhocson died on March 17, 1928. For the first time in National University, commencement exercises did not take place. WHO SUCCEEDED TABUÑAR? Ricardo Lacson Founder and Former Dean of Philippine Law School, in collaboration with Simeon Lacson and Mariano Jhocscon Officially became NU President in 1937. WHAT HAPPENED TO NU'S LAW SCHOOL? Due to Ricardo Lacson's resignation The University went through financial crisis during Lacson's term as president. He resigned as president, taking with him Philippine Law School WHO SUCCEEDED LACSON? Florentino Cayco President from 1937-1941 Laid out a financial recovery plan and addressed the improvement of the quality of instruction and the welfare of the faculty and the student body. NU became one of the founding members of the University Athletic Associations of the Philippines (UAAP). WHO SUCCEEDED LACSON? Florentino Cayco - Improved the quality of instructions and the welfare of students and employees - He also saw the waste of school supplies and equipment, excess employees and extravagance in different offices - He believed in merit, not friendship WHAT HAPPENED WHEN WWII BROKE OUT? The War Years (1942-45) Japanese soldiers stayed at the NU compound and instructed the Jhocsons to open the university. Jhocsons refused to collaborate with Japanese troops. They were forced to leave the university compound. DOMINGO JHOCSON’S TERM After the war, Domingo L. Jhocson, the eldest son of the founder, was appointed as the University President. Domingo served as NU President for 42 years (1945- 1987) until his death. Domingo was the academic pillar and propelled NU to a second golden age in the 1950s. DOMINGO JHOCSON’S TERM He was the first alumnus of the National University to graduate from Columbia University. He taught accounting at National University, and a year later, was appointed as acting dean of the College of Commerce. He was the university registrar from 1928 until 1936. DOMINGO JHOCSON’S TERM New fields in the engineering profession were offered in June 1946 such as Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. Two years later, Industrial Engineering and Mining Engineering were offered. Sanitary Engineering was opened in 1950. DOMINGO JHOCSON’S TERM Vocational courses were offered to meet the needs of World War II veterans who could not anymore pursue baccalaureate programs: Auto Mechanics Practical Electricity Refrigeration Welding Radio Operator Radio Mechanics Radio Technician Typewriting and Stenography WHO SUCCEEDED DOMINGO? Jesus M. Jhocson (1987-2003) Jesus, the sixth son of Mariano Jhocson and Miguela Martin, succeeded his brother Domingo in 1987. He was known for his almost single heroic-mindedness about keeping the legacy of his late father alive. NATIONAL UNIVERSITY DURING JESUS JHOCSON’S TERM His leadership style was contrasted with that of his predecessor. While Domingo was approachable, Jesus was a disciplinarian: Strong sense of stewardship to his family and to the university Keenly aware of his responsibility by admonishing employees who violate university rules and regulations NATIONAL UNIVERSITY DURING JESUS JHOCSON’S TERM He was the president during NU’s most difficult years: Student activism The 1998 Fire Dropped number of enrollees WHAT HAPPENED ON JANUARY 1, 1998? Fire incident A lit firecracker landed on the roof of one of the school building and caused a major fire. NU took a huge financial loss. The extent of damage to the University would unravel over time, as enrollment continued to drop in the years that followed. Teodoro Jhocson Ocampo After assuming presidency in 2003, Teodoro Ocampo realized early on that the survival of NU depended on an infusion of capital. The Henry Sy family had previously indicated an interest in acquiring part ownership of the school but failed to produce any concrete results. Teodoro Jhocson Ocampo When the Sy family again showed in the institution, Ocampo was able to overcome the opposing positions within the clan to sell the majority of the stocks to the Sy family for the university’s survival. With the partnership and new board of directors chaired by Hans Sy, NU embarked in an infrastructure program. DURING Ocampo’S TERM New colleges were established: College of Nursing in 2004 College of Computer Studies and the College of Hospitality Management in 2008 The College of Liberal Arts, College of Education, and the Graduate School were merged as the College of Education, Arts and Sciences (CEAS) in 2013 The College of Nursing and College of Pharmacy were merged into the College of Allied Health (CAH) DURING Ocampo’S TERM New major courses were offered: Digital Forensics in Computer Studies Bachelor of Physical Education-Major in Sports and Wellness Management (College of Education, Arts and Sciences) Accountancy (College of Business) Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2015 RENATO CARLOS ERMITA JR. He is the current president of the National University (208 to present). NU's Executive Vice-President and Chief Operations Officer from May 2014-May 2018. He was the Project Committee Head of NU Laguna- Sports Academy from January 2015-May 2018. Chairperson-Chief Operations Officer of Nazareth School Manila Transition Committee RENATO CARLOS ERMITA JR. He is the current president of the National University (2008 to present). National Univesity excelled in teaching (awarded 3 stars overall by the QS Stars rating for 2022) and Sports.
