(in that order) *Lenni Lenape means “original people”. *The Lenape had 3 clans - Wolf, Turtle, and Turkey. *The children belonged to the same clan as the mother. *The 2 language groups of the Lenape were Munsee and Unami *The yearly Lenape celebration celebrating the harvest was the Corn Dance. *The Lenape hunted animals such as deer, beavers, elk, and bears. *Deer were very important in the lives of the Lenape for many reasons. They provided them with meat to cook and dry for eating later. The Lenape used skins to make clothing, shoes, and blankets, They used the antlers and bones to make tools and the insides were dried and stretched to make thread. *Some of the crops raised by the Lenape were corn, beans, and squash. *Lenape Indian women were the farmers, did the cooking and stored food for the winter. *Lenape Indian men did the hunting, fishing and built their houses. *Lenape girls helped their mothers grow and gather food, take care of the house and cook meals. *Lenape boys went hunting and fishing with their fathers. *Lenape children had less time for play and more responsibilities than children of today. They did have toys and played tag, hide-and-seek and racing games, like children today. *The Lenape wrote using symbols to record stories and give warnings. They wrote on animal hides, rocks and bone. *Oral stories were important to the Lenape because they passed down traditions from generation to generation. They explained beliefs about creation and past events. Social values (ex: honesty, being responsible, respecting your elders, not bringing shame to the family, etc.) were an important part of a child’s upbringing.
