Chem 1 Learning Targets Unit 3: Interactions Between Matter 1. I can explain the organization of the periodic table. 1.1. I can relate the position of an element in the periodic table to its group and period. 1.2. I can use the periodic table to identify metals, semimetals/metalloids, and nonmetals. 1.3. I can identify alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, halogens, and noble gases. 1.4. I can recognize that elements in the same group have similar properties. 1.5. I can use the periodic table to compare elements in reference to ionization energy, electron affinity, and the relative sizes of ions and atoms. 2. I can describe the characteristics of ionic and covalent bonding. 2.1. I can illustrate bond formation through electron transfer and the formation of positive and negative ions. 2.2. I can illustrate bond formation through electron sharing using Lewis dot structures. 2.3. I can write formulas for ionic compounds and binary molecular compounds.
