Connective Tissues Types and Location Lecture Outline ❏ Loose C.T. ❏ Dense C.T. ❏ Reticular Elastic and Adipose C.T. Classification of Fibrous CTs I. Loose (Areolar) C.T. Contains more ground substance than collagen fibers. Fibroblasts are the predominant cells. Located in areas that require significant diffusion. Distributed throughout the body Where are loose CTs found? 1. Subepithelial of hollow organs. C.S. of the uterus Loose C.T Where are loose CTs found? 2.Subcutis (subcutaneous tissue/hypodermis) Where are loose CTs found? 3. Between adjacent cells of skeletal muscles. Where are loose CTs found? 4. Pancreatic glandular units II. Dense Connective Tissue ❏ Have more collagen fibers than ground substance. ❏ Provides tensile strength. ❏ Predominant cells are fibroblasts. ❏ Divided into 2 types: irregular and regular. Dense irregular CT Collagen fibers will appear to be randomly oriented. Ex. Dermis of the skin. Where are dense irregular CTs found? 1. Dermis of the skin 2. Capsules of many organs Eex. lymph node Dense regular CT Collagen fibers appear highly organized. No blood vessels although not completely avascular. Where are dense regular CTs found? Found in only 4 different locations: Tendons, ligaments, aponeuroses, and the cornea. III. Reticular CT Collagen cannot be viewed. Reticular fibers are secreted by reticular cells. Heavy metal staining is used to visualize these fibers. Found in lymphoid organs and bone marrow. Elastic CT Made exclusively of elastic (yellow) fibers. Some ligaments are made out of elastic fibers. Fibroblasts: there nuclei are S-shaped rather than spindle-shaped. Elastic CT found in the nuchal ligament Where are elastic CTs found? Large blood arteries (aorta) Embryonic CT It is a type of fibrous CT comprised of mesenchymal CT Adipose CT
