Confucianism What is your interpretation of this famous saying of Confucius? Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated. – Confucius Daoic Religions ❑Dao- Moral Order that permeates the universe. Constantly nurtures nature. ❑The goal is to live in harmony with nature Historical Background ❑Confucianism is considered as Daoic Religion which centers on the Chinese Philosophy of Dao (or The Way) ❑It originates in China founded by Kung Fuzi meaning Master Kong Life of Confucius ❑Confucius came from a noble family but by the time of his birth, they had already lost much of their wealth. ❑Served in minor government posts and had already gained a reputation as an all-around scholar. Historical Background ❑Born in the midst of political chaos in China. ❑Struggling to impose new guiding values to restore social order. ❑Confucius never meant to establish a new religion. He merely wanted to interpret and revive the ancient religion of Zhou Dynasty Historical Background ❑Advocates of Confucianism considered this as a philosophy because of the practicality and ethical wisdom of Confucius. Historical Background Confucianism is considered as religion because its ideal is inspirational, not in the supernatural sense but in the sense of aiming for excellence in one’s relationships with others. Teachings ❑Focus on relationships should be emphasized, for it is often taken for granted. These relationships we encounter everyday should be the easiest to perfect, but in reality they are the hardest to attain. Teachings ❑ The core teaching of Confucianism is how to be a “gentleman.” To be a gentleman, a person should follow the moral way, consisting of the virtues of love, righteousness, wisdom and loyalty. ❑ Becoming a gentleman promotes harmony in society. Conclusion: ❑Confucius aims to impose new guiding values to restore social order. ❑Thus, his teachings are more focus on becoming gentleman which promotes harmony in society as well as building relationship with other. Divide students into small groups, each group will make infographic on any of the concepts presented. You may opt to make an infographic on the brief history, core teachings, fundamental beliefs, practices or related issues of Confucianism. The following are the steps you shall do to accomplish this performance task: DIRECTIONS 1.Decide on the concept that you would like to make an infographic, 2.Then, try to make a poster that includes description of the concepts that you have drawn. Basically, Infographics are graphic visual representations of information, data, or knowledge intended to present information. 3.Each group will assign representative to present their output. What is your personal take behind this saying: It is easy to hate and it is difficult to love. This is how the whole scheme of things works.
