Communicatio DR EMMA n& CAMPBELL Interviewing Skills Communication A process in which one individual conveys information (intentionally or unintentionally) to another. It exists or occurs when one person attaches meaning to the verbal or nonverbal behaviour of another. Communication is determined by whether the receiver assigns meaning to words and body movements. This is communicated by giving your undivided attention, responding sensitively to the non verbal communication. Techniques of active listening also help to communicate empathy Unconditional positive regard When the social worker believes in the inherent worth of the person and treats them with respect no matter what the client has done before, presently or in the interview. The client has earned respect by being human and not by what they have done. This is very closely linked to displaying a non-judgemental attitude. We all make judgements all the time but in a professional relationship we must suspend our own judgement. Personal warmth ჻ Personal warmth exists when the client is made to feel safe and accepted. ჻If the worker has no warmth, they will seem insincere. ჻ Warmth is demonstrated mostly non-verbally such as in smiling, a soft voice, an interested posture, appropriate eye contact and gestures that convey openness and acceptance. Genuineness ∆ Being ‘real’ and speaking with authenticity. ∆We do what we say and we do not come across as phony. ∆This does not mean that we are completely honest because we are sensitive to the needs of others so we also exercise self-discipline.
