Bu isimleri tekil ve çoğul olarak kullanmak mümkündür. Tekil isimlerden önce “a/an” veya “one” yazılırken, çoğul isimlerin sonuna “–s”,”-es”, veya “-ies” eklenir. EXAMPLES one book (bir kitap) /............a book (herhangi bir kitap) books (kitaplar) /buks/ one chair (bir sandalye) /.....a chair chairs /çeiiz/ 14 Common English one car (bir araba) /............ a car cars /kaaz/ one bird (bir kuş) /............... a bird birds /böödz/ one baby (bir bebek) /......... a baby babies /beibiiz/ one box (bir kutu) /............. a box boxes /baksıs/ Eğer kelimenin ilk harfi ünlü bir ses ile telafuz ediliyorsa o isimden önce “an”, ünsüz bir ses ile telafüz ediliyorsa “a” gelir. EXAMPLES a unity/e yunit/..................... an elephant /en elefınt/ a shelf /e şelf/ an hour / an au/................... an ant/enent/ a cat /e ket/ Çoğul isimlerin sonu -s, -ss, -z, -x, -ch, yada -sh, harfleri ile bitiyorsa bu kelime- lerden sonra “–es” retirilir. EXAMPLES a brush............................... brushes /braşız/ two brushes a watch............................... watches /uoçız/ three watches a fox....................................foxes /faksız/ a few boxes a boss.................................bosses /bosız/ many bosses “–y” harfi ile bitten kelimelerde “y”den once ünsüz bir harf ise, ” –y” kaldırılarak “ –ies” getirilir EXAMPLES A baby (bir bebek)................babies two babies Sonu “–o” ile bitten kelimelerde çoğul “–s” veya “–es” ile yapılır. Sayılamayan isimler (uncountable nouns) teker teker sayamadığımız isimlerdir. Bu tür isimler “a/an, one” ile kullanılmadıkları gibi, çoğul da yapılamazlar.
