Climate-Smart Agriculture Workshop “CLIMATE-RESILIENT FOOD SECURITY FOR HOUSEHOLDS ACROSS THE FSM” PROJECT GCF (Green Climate Fund) Grant Module 1 Understanding Climate Change Module 1: What is climate change? What is Weather? What is Climate? Weather is what's happening in the Climate is like the average weather in air around us. a place for a long time (many years). It can be sunny, rainy, windy, hot, It's not just about hot or cold, but also about rain, wind, and even or cold. how often storms happen. It can change quickly, even in Unlike weather that changes one day quickly, climate stays mostly the same for a long time. Module 1: What is climate change?- Jeff Weather Climate Variability Climate Hours Days Month Months Years Decades Centuries Module 1: What causes Climate Change? - Greenhouse Gasses - Human activities Module 1: What causes Climate Change? Module 2 Climate Change Impacts on Agriculture and Food Security Module 2: How does climate change impact agriculture? Impacts Effect Module 2: How does agriculture impact climate change? Main Sources Module 2: The link between climate change and food security? ❖ Food Security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their daily dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. 4 Dimensions of food security 1. Availability of food Presence of enough quality food supplied locally or import 2. Economic and physical access to food Ability to obtain quality food through income and food prices 3. Utilization of Food The capacity to use the food available considering the aspect of food safety, hygiene, and nutrition knowledge. 4. Stability of Food Continued access to food even during crisis or economic downturns Module 2: The link between climate change and food security? Climate change is making it harder to grow food and get it to people who need it. The impact of climate change on crops includes reduced growth, spoilage, higher food prices, and shortages, especially on import-reliant islands. This disproportionately affects people already struggling to afford food. The good news is that we can still take action to fight climate change and help communities adapt, so everyone has enough food to eat in the future. Module 3 Climate Smart Agriculture Module 3: What is climate-smart agriculture? Climate-Smart Agriculture: Growing Food for a Healthy Planet! Raising animals and plants Mulching Agroforestry in the FSM Combats climate change challenges: Helps farmers adapt to hotter weather, less rain, and extreme weather events. Boosts food security: Ensures we can keep growing enough healthy food for everyone. Reduces pollution: Lowers greenhouse gas emissions and protects air and water quality. Module 3: Gender Issues in climate-smart agriculture? Climate-Smart Farming: A Fair Fight for Everyone? Challenges for women Harder to adapt Gender equality is important man and woman working together on a farm Module 4 Climate-smart agriculture solutions for your area Module 4: Local climate-smart practices 1. Zero Tillage 2. Drip Irrigation 3. Livestock Manure Management Cont. Module 4: Local climate-smart practices 1. Crop Rotation 2. Adoption of Nitrogen-Efficient Crop Varieties 3.
