Airra Mhae Ilagan COMMON LABORATORY GLASSWARE Glassware Use Graduated Cylinder Measures the volume of liquid Wash bottle Rinses various pieces of laboratory glassware, such as test tubes and round bottom flasks Side arm flask or vacuum Filters solutions or removes solvent under reduced flask pressure Erlenmeyer flask (also Contain liquids and for mixing, heating, cooling, known as conical flask incubation, filtration, storage, and other and titration flask liquid-handling processes. 18 Graduated Cylinder A graduated cylinder, also known as a measuring cylinder or mixing cylinder, is a common piece of laboratory equipment used to measure the volume of a liquid. It has a narrow cylindrical shape. Each marked line on the graduated cylinder represents the amount of liquid that has been measured. For accuracy the volume on graduated cylinders is depicted on scales with 3 significant digits: 100mL cylinders have 1ml grading divisions while 10mL cylinders have 0.1 mL grading divisions. 19 Erlenmeyer Flask The slanted sides and narrow neck of this flask allow the contents of the flask to be mixed by swirling, without risk of spillage, making them suitable for titrations by placing it under the buret and adding solvent and the indicator in the Erlenmeyer flask. Such features similarly make the flask suitable for boiling liquids. Hot vapour condenses on the upper section of the Erlenmeyer flask, reducing solvent loss. Erlenmeyer flasks' narrow necks can also support filter funnels. 20 COMMON LABORATORY GLASSWARE 21 COMMON LABORATORY GLASSWARE Glassware Use Beaker Container to hold liquid or solid samples Funnel Guides liquid or powder into a small opening Test tube Used to handle chemical. Convenient container for heating small amounts of liquids or solids. Watch glass A surface to evaporate a liquid or heat solids Hold solids while being weighed Cover for a beaker 22 Beaker ► Beakers are often graduated, that is, marked on the side with lines indicating the volume contained. For instance, a 250 mL beaker might be marked with lines to indicate 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 mL of volume. These marks are not intended for obtaining a precise measurement of volume (a graduated cylinder or a volumetric flask would be a more appropriate instrument for such a task), but rather an estimation. Most beakers are accurate to within ~10%. 23 COMMON LABORATORY GLASSWARE Glassware used in all chemistry courses: Drying crystal solids using a watch glass and passing a stream of dry air from an inverted funnel 24 COMMON LABORATORY GLASSWARE Test tubes are the perfect shape and size to hold small amounts of substances A watch glass is a round, concave glass dish used for evaporation in chemistry. It can also be employed for weighing solids and as a lid for flasks and beakers. Airra Mhae Ilagan COMMON LABORATORY GLASSWARE Glassware used for conducting reactions and purifications: Glassware Use Cork Ring Hold round bottom flasks, beakers and other glass containers snuggly to ensure against breakage. Fractionating column Essential item used in the distillation of liquid mixtures to separate the mixture into its component parts, or fractions, based on the differences in volatilities. West Condenser Cools vapors and condensing them back to liquid droplets that flow down the condenser into the receiver flask. 27 COMMON LABORATORY GLASSWARE Glassware Use Separatory funnel Used in liquid-liquid extractions to separate the components of a mixture into two immiscible solvent phases of different densities Stopper Prevents the spillage of liquid in the separatory funnel when shaking. Round bottom flask Specifically shaped for uniform heat distribution, Used for distillation, chemical reactions, heating liquid sample, and storage demands. Three-way adapter Aids in distillation. 28 COMMON LABORATORY GLASSWARE Glassware used for conducting reactions and purifications: Glassware Use Claisen adapter Used in situations which require more than one outlet from a round-bottom flask. Vacuum adapter Connects to the lower end of the condenser and serves to direct the distilled liquid into the receiving flask. Thermometer Maintains vacuum on the glassware adapter system while monitoring the temperature Plastic clip (Keck Prevents joints from separating. clip) Rubber fitting for Allows thermometer to fit snuggly into the 29thermometer adapter adapter to maintain vacuum. Dress appropriately ✔ Wear a laboratory gown or coat to protect your clothing and minimize skin exposure. ✔ Shoes should completely cover the feet area. ✔ Long hair should be tied back. ✔ Wear protective goggles or glasses at all times in the Laboratory. 2. Keep your working area clean and organized. 36 LABORATORY SAFETY 3. For chemical reagents (solids and liquids): Keep them in the assigned dispensing area. Use laboratory instrument (test tube, beaker, etc.) when transferring reagents. Check the name on the reagent before using them. Label every instrument where chemicals are transferred. Avoid contaminating the reagents. Never return unused chemicals to the reagent bottles. 37 LABORATORY SAFETY 4. Keep the balance and weighing area clean. Use weighing papers for the solid reagents. Never weigh hot objects. 38 LABORATORY SAFETY 5. Dispose waste properly. THINK first before putting anything into the trash or sink. Always ASK if you are not sure how to properly dispose your waste. 39 LABORATORY SAFETY Sharps Container Broken Glass Box 40 LABORATORY SAFETY 5. Avoid direct contact with chemical Wash your hands immediately anytime you get chemicals on them and after every laboratory activities. Clean immediately all spillage before it dries up or goes into your skin and things. Never use your mouth when using a pipet. Never eat or drink in the laboratory. Do not look directly into the open end of a test tube while a reaction is being conducted. 41 LABORATORY SAFETY Spillage Cleanup Kit 42 LABORATORY SAFETY 5. Avoid direct contact with chemical To determine the odor of any chemicals, do not inhale the fumes directly. Waft vapors with your hand toward your nose. Use the fume hood for all irritating and toxic vapors. 43 LABORATORY SAFETY 6. Handle glassware with precaution. When heating with Bunsen burner, use ONLY beakers, Erlenmeyer flask, or test tubes. Do not hold a test tube in your hands during a chemical reaction. Do not touch glass that has been near a flame. Never use a thermometer as a stirrer. 44 LABORATORY SAFETY 7. Be aware of the Material Science Data Sheet (MSDS). MSDS – is a document that provides workers with procedures for safely handling or working with a particular substance. It includes: technical information of the chemical, necessary protective equipment, how to handle spills, first aid suggestions, storage and disposal, and the general health effects. 48 LABORATORY SAFETY 9. Never work alone in the laboratory area. 10. Report all accidents to your instructor no matter how small it may seem. 11. DO NOT perform unauthorized experiments. 12.
