According to Dan, what is the risk related to offering rewards? - **Offering rewards can narrow our focus and restrict our possibility.** 2. According to Dan, how are people motivated? - **People are motivated by autonomy, mastery, and purpose** 3. What motivates you? How can you relate that to the messages in Dan's talk? **Teams** *[Describe]* the five types of teams: 1\. **Work Teams** \- Teams that do just what their name suggests: the daily work. When empowered, they are self-managed teams 2\. **Problem solving teams** \- Teams of knowledge workers who meet to solve specific problems, then disband 3\. **Self managed teams** \- Teams that are empowered to decide how they complete their daily tasks 4\. **Cross functional teams** -Teams that are made up of members from different functions, or parts, of a firm 5\. **Virtual teams** \- Groups of geographically or organizationally separated co-workers who use technology to communicate and work together. *[Describe]* three team characteristics: 1\. **Size** \- Can range widely, but most have fewer than 12 members \- Ideal size is usually six or seven members \- Teams of more than 20 people should be divided into sub--teams. 2\. **Level** **-** Average level of ability, experience, personality, or any other factor \- Strong teams have talented members. 3\. **Diversity** \- The team's differences in ability, experience, personality, or any other factor. \- Important consideration for teams when completing a wide variety of different or complex tasks **Activity -- Scavenger Hunt** *[Describe]* the stages of team development: 1. [Team cohesiveness] - Extent to which team members feel committed to the team and motivated to remain part of it - Increases when members interact frequently, share common attitudes and goals, and enjoy being together. - Promotes cooperative behaviour, generosity, and a willingness to help each other. - Enables quick achievement of higher performance levels 2. [Team norms] - A standard of conduct shared by team members that guides their behaviour - Informal standards that identify key values and clarify team members' expectations - Can be positive (contributing to accomplishment of goals) or negative (contributing to reduced work effort/quality, poor jobs attendance) [What is team conflict?] Conflict occurs when the needs of one person or one group do not match those of another, and one side attempts to block the other side's intentions or goals - Main cause of the team conflict is disagreement over goals and priorities - Also, task-related issues, incompatible personalities, being overtired and overstressed, and team diversity [What is cognitive conflict?] Cognitive conflict focuses on problem-related differences of opinion - Reconciling these differences strongly improves team performance [What is affective conflict?] Affective conflict focuses on emotional reactions that can occur when disagreements become personal rather than professional. **Communication** A close-up of a chart Description automatically generated *[Describe]* the six factors that affect communication? 1. Feedback [How is communication impacted by context?] Noise is some type of interference that influences the transmission of messages and feedback. It can result from physical factors such as poor reception of a cellphone or differences in people's attitudes and perceptions. [Cynical listening] occurs when the receiver of a message feels that the sender is trying to gain some advantage from the communication. 2\. [Offensive listening] occurs when the receiver tries to catch the speaker in a mistake or contradiction. 3\. [Polite listening] occurs when the receiver is thinking about what they want to say when the speaker finishes. 4\. [Active listening] requires involvement with the information and empathy with the speaker's situation. **What is the impact of non-verbal communication?** Non-verbal cues can have more impact on communications than many people realize. In fact, some people estimate that 70 percent of interpersonal communication is conveyed through non-verbal cues.
