Chapter 7: Safety signs Safety signs Chapter 7: Safety signs SAFETY SIGNS AND THE LAW Safety Signs and Signals Regulations require employers to provide safety signs to raise awareness of risks to health and safety. There are 5 types of safety signs in general use (PROHIBITION, warning, mandatory, safe conditions, and fire safety signs) (ISO 7010 - standards) Each has a designated shape and colour. The sign is circular with a white background, black pictogram and red border and crossbar. All writing is white on a red background. They are danger signs, warning signs, and caution signs; each relates directly to the severity of hazards present (or potentially present). Chapter 7: Safety signs GHS Pictograms Aside from the above-mentioned safety signs and symbols, there are labels that are specifically or are mostly used for identifying potential chemical hazards called GHS pictograms. GHS pictograms are graphic labels that communicate the potential risk associated with a specific chemical and unprotected exposure to its elements. It is characterized by a symbol on a white background, framed with red borders, and an imagery that distinctly presents the classification or type of potential hazard. GHS pictograms are part of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals—an internationally agreed-upon standard of labeling scheme and hazard classification in relation to hazardous chemicals. According to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), and in compliance with the updated Hazard Communication Standard (HCS), it is required that all chemical labels have a standardized signal word, precautionary statement, and pictograms attached for each hazard class and category Chapter 7: Safety signs GHS Pictograms Chapter 7: Safety signs SAFETY SIGNS - SUMMARY There are four types of safety signs in general use: prohibition; mandatory; warning; safe condition.
