Chapter 4 Current Fields/Careers in Civil Engineering Melissa A. Pungtilan, CE, ME-1 Instructor OBJECTIVES After completing this module, the student must be able to: 1. Define different careers of Civil Engineering 2. Understand the right specialization to pursue 3. Know the trend of Civil Engineering Development SPECIALIZATIONS OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Construction Engineering Structural Engineering and Management Transportation Engineering Environmental and Water Resources Engineering / Energy Engineering Hydraulics Engineering Geotechnical Engineering Construction Engineering and Management - an interdisciplinary field that combines engineering principles with management techniques to oversee the planning, design, and construction of infrastructure projects. Construction Engineering and Management These civil engineers shall: oversee a building project from start to finish coordinate all the different professionals involved in such a project, including architects, builders, electricians, plumbers, and financiers. much of construction management involves keeping risk to a minimum by focusing on safety and compliance with national building codes. Construction Engineering and Management CEM can help improve safety, productivity, and natural disaster resilience. Civil engineers engaged in this capacity are contracted by the builder or developer to essentially time manage the project. This involves specialized knowledge of all trades involved and planning for contingencies such as weather. This is a demanding job and requires an ability to work under pressure. When a large development falls behind schedule many millions of money can be at stake which can create a high pressure environment to work in. Construction Engineering and Management CAREERS OF CEM PROFESSIONALS IN THE PHILIPPINES typically have a background in civil engineering, construction management, or architecture, work in a range of roles, including project management, construction supervision, cost estimation, and quality assurance. play a critical role in ensuring that infrastructure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and within budget. Construction Engineering and Management CHALLENGES need to address the country's infrastructure deficit infrastructure quality and availability development of innovative and cost- effective solutions to infrastructure challenges Environmental and Energy Engineer This specialization focuses specifically on creating projects that sustain or improve the environment in which they exist. Alternative energy sources like solar, wind or water Better insulation to reduce energy usage, and plumbing fixtures that use less water, among other methods. Environmental engineers may also position buildings in more sustainable ways to take advantage of natural lighting or solar energy collection, for example. Environmental and Energy Engineer environmental engineers are concerned with developing ways to prevent pollution of the natural environment and with remediating areas that have already been polluted by industrial activity or mining. also encompasses aspects of urban planning as well as the health and safety of indoor environments. typically employed by private consulting firms and governmental regulatory agencies. Environmental and Energy Engineer CAREERS OF EEE IN THE PHILIPPINES typically have a background in civil engineering, environmental science, or environmental management work in a range of roles, including air and water quality management, waste management, and environmental impact assessment. play a critical role in ensuring that the country's natural resources are managed sustainably, and that environmental quality is protected. Environmental and Energy Engineer CHALLENGES need to address pollution and its impacts on public health and the environment areas affected by mining and other industrial activities need to promote sustainable resource use and management Geotechnical Engineering focuses on the study of soil, rocks, and other materials that make up the Earth's crust. stability of the soil and rock on which a project is built as well as its chemical composition are the main considerations Geotechnical Engineering CAREERS OF GE IN THE PHILIPPINES have a background in civil engineering or geological sciences work in a range of roles, including site investigation, foundation design, and slope stabilization. play a critical role in ensuring that infrastructure projects are built on stable and safe ground. Geotechnical Engineering CHALLENGES need to design foundations and structures that can withstand the country's geologic hazards. need to address the country's unstable slopes and landslide-prone areas. STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING Structural engineering a subfield of civil engineering that focuses on the design, analysis, and construction of structures, such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure projects. Structural engineers need to ensure that buildings or other structures can support their own weight as well as the weight of those who will be using them. STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING CAREERS OF SE IN THE PHILIPPINES typically have a background in civil engineering and work in a range of roles, including design, analysis, and construction supervision. play a critical role in ensuring that structures are built to withstand the forces of nature and are safe for occupants. STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING CHALLENGES need to design structures that are resistant to earthquakes. The Philippines is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, which makes it prone to seismic activity. need to balance safety with affordability. SE must work to design housing solutions that are both safe and affordable, using innovative materials and construction techniques where possible. TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING Transportation engineering is a subfield of civil engineering that focuses on the study, design, and management of transportation systems, such as roads, highways, bridges, railways, airports, and seaports. Safety and capacity are major considerations of transportation engineers improve traffic flow patterns alleviate traffic congestion prevent vehicle accidents. TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING CAREERS OF TE IN THE PHILIPPINES have a background in civil engineering or transportation planning and work in a range of roles, including transportation system planning, road design, traffic engineering, and public transportation management. play a critical role in ensuring that the country's transportation infrastructure is safe, efficient, and sustainable. TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING CHALLENGES need to address the country's congested road network and growing demand for public transportation must work to design and implement transportation systems that are safe, efficient, and accessible to all. WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING “Having safe and adequate drinking water may be taken for granted in the industrialized nations of the world, but developing and developed nations alike need water resources engineers to build the infrastructure that provides clean water to those who depend on it for their survival.” WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING Water resources engineering subfield of civil engineering that focuses on the study, design, and management of water resources, such as rivers, lakes, groundwater, and oceans. study and management of equipment, facilities and techniques that are used to manage and preserve life’s most plentiful resource. Includes the development of irrigation, waste disposal, and canals WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING CAREERS OF WRE IN THE PHILIPPINES have a background in civil engineering or environmental science and work in a range of roles, including water supply and sanitation, flood management, and irrigation systems. play a critical role in ensuring the sustainable use and management of the country's water resources. WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING CHALLENGES need to manage water resources sustainably in the face of climate change. the country is experiencing more frequent and intense typhoons and floods, which can cause damage to infrastructure and livelihoods. need to provide safe and reliable water supply to all Filipinos. WRE must work to design and implement water supply and sanitation systems that are affordable, sustainable, and accessible to all.
