The only constant thing in life is CHANGE -Heraclitus Chapter 2.1 Human Development Meaning Concept Approaches Think-Pair-Share Describe the kids in the pictures. What will they possibly become? Is there a change that happened to them since they Marian were babies? Mark Analysis: In your own words, how do you define development? Will three-year old Mark be able to do all that seven-year-old Marian can do? Why or why not? Will there be differences in their development (pace, or rate of development)? Analysis: Will the process of development take place very fast or gradually? Do you believe that they will continue to develop even in adulthood? Or will they stop developing in adulthood? Two Approaches to Human Development TRADITIONAL LIFE-SPAN DEVELOPMENT Extensive change Even in adulthood, from birth to change takes adolescence, little place as it does or no change in during childhood. adulthood and decline in late or old age. Characteristics of Human Development from a Life-Span Perspective Paul Baltes (Santrock, 2002) 1 Development is LIFELONG Development does not end in adulthood. Humans will continue to develop even in adulthood. 2 Development is PLASTIC Plasticity refers to the potential for change. Development is possible throughout the lifespan. “No one is too old to learn” 3 Development is MULTIDIMENSIONAL Development consists of biological, cognitive, and socio-emotional dimensions. “Development as a process is complex because it is the product of biological, cognitive and socio-emotional processes “ (Santrock, 2022) Biological involves the changes in Processes the individuals physical nature brain, weight, height, hormonal changes during puberty, and cardiovascular when they reach late adulthood Development is Relatively Orderly sit, crawl and walk run a. Proximodistal Pattern muscular control of the trunk and arms comes earlier compared to the hands and fingers b. Cephalo-caudal Pattern during infancy, greatest growth always occurs at the top (head) - growth in size, weight and down from top to bottom Development takes place gradually development does not take place overnight it takes years to become a teenager or adult weeks, months, or years change Cognitive involves changes in the individual’s thought, Processes intelligence and language sound word sentence memorizing first prayer singing of national anthem imagination (profession) playing board games solving mathematical problems involves changes in the Socioemotional individual’s relationship with Processes other people, changes in emotion, and changes in personality sweet smile - affectionately touched tantrum - can’t get their wants aggressive - fine lady/gentleman Biological Cognitive Socioemotional Processes Processes Processes INTERTWINED Kids - undernourished - troubled by the thought of their parents that are about to separate - could not concentrate on their studies (fail or repeat) - drop out - illiteracy - unskilled - unemployed 4 Development is CONTEXTUAL Individuals are changing beings in a changing world. They respond and act on contexts (biological make up, physical environment, cognitive processes, historical, social, and cultural context). People may vary depending on the context therefore making us develop differently from each other. 5 Development involves GROWTH, MAINTENANCE and REGULATION Growth, maintenance and regulation are three (3) goals of human development. The goals of individuals vary among developmental stages.
