He became very happy and began at once to think of a name for the boy. On the seventh day, as he lay asleep near Ka‟bah, he dreamt that he should give the baby unusual name of Muhammad just as Aminah herself had dreamt about also. In the second half of Ramadan, The Archangel Gabriel came to Muhammad (PBUOH) in the cave and commanded him to 'Read'. Muhammad (PBUOH) replied 'I cannot read.' He then said again 'Read.' 'I cannot', replied Muhammad (PBUOH) For the third time the Archangel commanded Muhammad (PBUOH) to read, but still he said he could not. Archangel Gabriel then said: “Read: In the Name of thy Lord who created, Created man from a clot. Read: And thy Lord is the Most Generous Who taught by pen, Taught man that which he knew not. Professional Development & Humanities Oman History and Islamic Culture-(UHS00102) Definition of Islam ▪ Islam is a universal monotheism, which originated in Arabian peninsula. ▪ Islam literally means “submission” was founded on teachings of Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah Be Upon Him) as an expression of surrender to will of Allah. ▪ Traditional Muslims believe that Allah is the one true God with no partner or equal and that the inspiration of this belief system comes straight from Allah and those who were chosen by him to deliver these teachings to the general population. Professional Development & Humanities Oman History and Islamic Culture-(UHS00102) Mission of Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah Be Upon Him) ▪ Muhammad (PBUOH) returned from the cave to his wife Khadija, who became the first follower of this new religion and she strengthened and supported him to spread his message, and she stood up to people who were against him. ▪ Prophet Muhammad (PBUOH) began to call secretly of Allah's message to those who were close to him and whom he could trust. ▪ His main message is that there is no other God BUT Allah and that people should lead their lives in a way that is pleasing to Allah. Testimony (Shahadah) : that there is none worthy of worship except Allah (God) and that Muhammad (PBUOH) is his messenger. 2. Prayers (Salah) : Performing of five daily prayers 3. Alms (Zakat) : Giving of charity which is one quarter (2.5%) of net worth of property kept for more than a year, with few exceptions. This money or produce is distributed among the poor. 4. Fasting (Ramadhan) : Fasting from dawn to dusk in the month of Ramadan. 5. However, since growing popularity of Islam, Muhammad and his followers lives were in risk, then entire community moved from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. He did not stop here but sent numerous emissaries to different parts of Arabia. ▪ Today Islam remains one of the most flourishing religions in the world; it is the second largest religion with around 24% of earth’s population. ▪ There are only two main sources of Islam: Quran and Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah Be Upon Him). Women expressed their opinions freely and their advice was heard. ⮚ Vices of drinking, gambling and prostitution were banned. ⮚ Prevalent slavery discouraged. ⮚ Institution of marriage taken seriously (Give examples 🕮) ⮚ Thus women in general and wives in particular got status, respect and had a voice. ⮚ Usury [riba] was forbidden. ⮚ Alms was made a pillar of Islam to encourage charity.
