Let us translate the good citizenship values derived from the Preamble of the Constitution into concrete action in order to build our nation. -Comm. Teresita D. Baltazar Memori ze! WHAT IS GOOD CITIZENSHIP Good citizenship means to conduct oneself in accordance with the rights, duties, and privileges of being an inhabitant of a geographical location by means of birth or naturalization. While this generally means a state or nation, the term has also been applied to inhabitants of particular communities as well as the world (i.e., world citizen). IMPORTANCE IMPORTANCE Being a good citizen promotes peace and stability hence development. A good citizen promotes law and order hence enjoyment of rights and freedoms. Good citizenship promotes cordial relationship and social peace. It reduces government expenditure on security organizations necessary for maintaining law and order. It promotes the good name of a country, hence encourages tourism which is important for our development. It curbs against social vices like corruption, nepotism or tribalism since a good citizen cannot indulge in such activities. It promotes good relationship with neighbors. Principles of Good Citizenship Good Citizenship is the duty of every Filipino. Good Citizenship Actions proceed from Good Citizenship Values. The buildings of a strong, peaceful, progressive nation, of the just and humane society envisioned in the Philippine Constitution requires that every Filipino citizen makes his unique contribution thereto. Citizens are called to help, affirm and reinforce one another as they seek to be good citizens. Good governance and good citizenship are inseparable. RESPECT AND REVERENCE Respect is an essential foundation in our society and is sought after as you progress through various stages of leadership and responsibility. It’s something that you want to earn and something that you want to bestow. Respect is the basic component of all cordial relations. The elders need to be honored and respected for all that they’ve done for us and for the society in general. Gratitude comes in many forms, and you can express it by way of love, kindness, and simply by respecting them. We must also learn to respect persons in authority because they are strong figures that are necessary to maintain social order and prevent society from devolving into chaos. PUNCTUALITY AND PROMPTNESS Punctuality is the fact or quality of being on time. Why is it important? Being punctual, shows you are dependable. It strengthens and reveals your integrity. Being punctual also builds and reveals your discipline. The punctual man shows that he can organize his time, that he pays attention to details, and that he can put aside this to do that – he can set aside a pleasure to take care of business. OBEDIENCE Obedience is essential as it is one of the foundations of society. Without stability, productivity and the well-being of the citizens become non-existent. Obedience is not just about rules, regulations, and punishment. It is about cooperating with one another in order to have a safe and orderly school, home, and community. Think of the peace and freedom you enjoy when neighbors respect one another and obey the law—and the chaos that follows when there is no law and order. Obedience makes teamwork and cooperation COOPERATION Cooperation also plays an important role because it allows people and groups to work together to achieve a common goal or derive mutual benefits. Cooperation exists at many levels and takes place between individuals and organizations as well as between states and countries. Cooperation allows participants to exchange valuable information that helps both sides improve their knowledge bases and work in a time- and resource-efficient manner. PATRIOTISM AND LOYALTY Patriotism, in the best sense of the word, is love of justice and democracy for all your fellow citizens. One can show patriotism and loyalty to their country by simply studying history. You cannot change the future without a firm understanding of the past. Thus, being a responsible citizen demands a firm grasp of history. Learn about our culture in all its splendor and horror so that you can engage in factual conversations and debate. Gain a deeper understanding of where we have been as a country so that you can help inform where we are going next. COURAGE Courage is the ability to confront something painful or difficult or dangerous despite any fear. The root word for courage, however, is “coeur”—the French word for “heart.” Courage is not a quality, but a choice; a person feels the fear or pain or danger, but chooses to persevere anyway. Unlike bravery, courage is driven by a cause; the courageous person believes that cause is worth standing up and fighting for, despite all the clear reasons not to. It takes a great effort, because what’s on the other end merits it. BRAVERY Bravery is the ability to confront something painful or difficult or dangerous without any fear. The root word for bravery is the Italian word “bravo,” which means “bold” but also once meant “wild, savage.” It’s a quality, not a state of mind; it doesn’t need a cause to awaken it. To the person who has it, it’s effortless; it’s eating a caterpillar on the playground because a friend dares you to, without a second thought. It’s jumping from the Duties and Obligatio ns of being a FILIPIN O CITIZEN HOW TO BE A GOOD FILIPINO CITIZEN?
