Carbon Management Plan Estate Office Martin Oakes So what does that mean for us! Carbon Management Plan • The challenge • Performance to date • Future targets • What are we doing • Some projects in detail Some of the Challenges Some Some of the Challenges Some of the • The University is expanding, more new Challenges Some of the Challenges the acquisition of Castle buildings.ofRecent MeadowSome Campus.of Challenges Some of the Challenges We have more energy intensive research the Challenges Some of the•Challenges in our Science and Engineering faculties. Some of the Challenges • We have greater expectation and requirements for our buildings in terms of heating/ cooling and ventilation! • Decarbonising heat. Significant reliance on gas! 4 Carbon Management Plan Progress to date (scope 1 and 2 emissions) 2009/10 baseline CO2 emissions of 68,000t. 2020 target 41,000t Malaysia 4,779 Carbon Dioxide Emissions by Campus 70,000 60,000 Tonnes CO2 50,000 Fugitive Emisions 40,000 Medical School 30,000 Others Jubilee Campus 20,000 Sutton Bonigton 10,000 University Park 0 14/15 15/16 16/17 17/18 18/19 19/20 20/21 21/22 students Science-based targets 63% reduction by 2030! Efficiency gains - Replacement of engineering assets pumps, fans, chillers, boilers etc and via CBRP. (£10m per year investment) - Refurbishment of spaces, windows, heating/ cooling and lighting Generation - Power by large scale solar PV and possibly wind turbines. - Heat, move away from gas to electric heat pumps following investment in thermal insulation as above. Carbon Offsetting - Used to ‘offset those emissions that would otherwise be difficult to remove, prioritising additionally and permanence Examples of Projects we have done or are planning to do! Fume Cupboards A standard Fume Cupboard operating 24 hrs a day 7 days a week uses a total of 38,000kWh of natural gas to provide heated replacement air into the lab and 11,000 kWh of electricity a year to power the supply air and extract fans Annual energy cost over £3,000 Annual carbon emissions 9 t CO2 We have over 750 of these! 6/3/23 10 Fume Cupboard Possible Energy Savings • Can the fume cupboard be turned off over night and weekends? 75% saving • Fixed reduction in face velocity eg 0.5m/s to 0.4 m/s subject to risk assessments. 20% saving • Full variable volume FC extract system with auto sash closer. 60 to 75% saving Sutton Bonington Campus Main Boiler House CHP 800kW Combined Heat and Power. Total installed cost of £1.35m Annual fuel cost saving £260K Annual Carbon saving 1,150 t CO2 (Based on 2017 carbon emission factors) no carbon savings at todays carbon factors! CHP Basics CHP is the simultaneous production of heat and electricity from a single fuel source, in this case Natural gas. Unlike a conventional power station the heat is used which enables overall significant energy/ carbon savings Conventional power station Combined heat and power Sutton Bonington Campus Boiler House Typical Winter Monthly Energy Use Medical School QMC Energy Intensive & Expensive Aging Building 24/7 Operation of many systems Electrical was £560 now£600K Steam was £1.1m now£500K Linked to QMC Medical School Replacement chilled water system • Installation of high efficiency chilled water plant to replace steam absorption units. • 3 off units will give an total installed duty of 2MW. • Total installed cost of £1.45m • Annual fuel cost saving £276K • Annual Carbon saving 933 t CO2 Sutton Bonington. Vets School 1000m2 Photo Voltaic Array • Maximum output of 145kW with estimated annual yield of 127,115kW. • Total installed cost of £200K • Annual fuel cost saving of £18K. • Annual Carbon saving 68 t CO2 (2017) now 24 t CO2 due to reduced UK power carbon emission factor Sutton Bonington 500kW Wind Turbine ! 6/3/23 Pl n i n an p a g io t a c i l p it w n n w a r d h s e u s to our • Proposed installation adjacent s i r dairy centre, subject to planning. a d a r • Annual yieldAof 1,600,000kWh or approx’ Msite electrical consumption. 15% of E the o t e • Installed cost £1.6m u d • Annual fuel saving £232K. • Annual Carbon savings 754t CO2 (2016) now 306 t CO2 due to reduced UK carbon emission factor. 18 Sutton Bonington 1.4MW PV Array (subject to planning etc) Sutton Bonington Solar PV detailed proposals • 3,040 panels of total surface area 6,570m2 • Requires approximately 4 acres land • Peak power likely to be 1300kW • Annual yield of around 1,278,000kWh • 15% of total SB campus electrical use • Annual saving around 245 t CO2 and £185,000 • Installed cost £1.4m Replacement of district heating at University Park • Proposal for up to £18m investment to replace complete system. • Gas fired boiler plant supplemented with renewable energy source heat pumps. • Annual carbon savings up to 2,995 t CO2. • Future building fabric improvements to enable full conversion to electric heat pumps with zero carbon heating!
