CANADIAN DRIVER’S LICENCE REFERENCE GUIDE In Canada, provincial/territorial licencing regulations are modeled on the guidelines set out in the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) National Safety Code (NSC) that is supported by four standards. All Canadian licenced drivers must meet these requirements prior to being eligible to operate a commercial vehicle, and are required to carry a driver’s licence that is valid for the vehicle and conditions under which it is operated. This guide will identify each of the 13 Canadian jurisdictions (10 provinces and 3 territories) and their driver licencing classification system. The content includes the driver licence class, type of vehicle permitted to be operated, and restriction/endorsement codes. DISCLAIMER/CAUTION The Canadian Driver’s Licence Reference Guide is designed to be used as guidelines only. While the guidelines represent good practices, they may not conform exactly to current provincial/territorial regulations. Inspectors are cautioned to always follow current regulations when determining what licence information is required. © 1997–2013 Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance {*Revised April 1, 2013} All rights reserved. 97 ALBERTA ALBERTA DRIVERS LICENCE January 2013 RESTRICTIONS/ENDORSEMENTS: Code 98 Significance A Adequate lenses B Special conditions as shown C Periodic medical examination D Periodic vision report E Periodic driver examination F Valid temporary licence G Licence valid without photo H Daylight driving only J Both outside mirrors K Automatic transmission L Adequate hand controls M Under Transportation Safety Board review N Excludes Class 2 and 4 operation Q Air brake endorsement S School bus endorsement T Special medical U Completed driver course © 1997–2013 Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance {*Revised April 1, 2013} All rights reserved. NOVA SCOTIA NOVA SCOTIA DRIVERS LICENCE January 2013 RESTRICTIONS: Most restriction codes are printed on the back of the driver’s license. Some codes (i.e. area restrictions) may be too lengthy to print on the back of the card, and those codes will cause a large red “R” to be printed on the front of the license to alert law enforcement’s attention to the restriction. In order to know what these particular codes mean, law enforcement must contact the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Many restriction codes will also cause a large red “R” to be printed on the front of the driver’s license even where the code itself prints fully on the back of the license. Again, it is expected that this will draw law enforcement’s attention to the particular restriction. Our driver’s license does not print a “Y” or “N” on the front of the license to indicate whether the particular driver has any restrictions. Restrictions Due to Age: None ENDORSEMENTS: The following codes are used and displayed on the licence: A Valid for Any Motorcycle and Motor-driven Cycle. Client must hold a valid Class 1-5 license, successfully complete a written knowledge test for Class 6 (motorcycle) and successfully demonstrate driving ability in a Class 6 vehicle. Client must hold a valid Class 1-4 license, successfully complete a written knowledge test, vision screening for operation of a school bus, and successfully demonstrate driving ability in a school bus with seating capacity appropriate for the Class of license held. Furthermore, the client must be at least 19 years of age, and must submit a satisfactory medical assessment form on application for the school bus endorsement. Note: A medical assessment form must be completed on any subsequent renewal and yearly after the age of 65. C Valid for Motorcycle and School Bus. Combination of requirements for endorsements A and B noted above. D Valid Only for Motorcycle with Engine Size of 100 cc or less and motor-driven cycle. Client must hold a valid Class 1-5 license, successfully complete a written knowledge test for Class 6 (motorcycle), and successfully demonstrate driving ability in a Class 6 vehicle with an engine size of 100 cc or less. E Valid for School Bus and Motorcycle with Engine Size of 100 cc or less and motor-driven cycle. Combination of requirements for endorsements B and D noted above. 03 Valid for Vehicle Equipped with Air Brakes. While this “endorsement” is actually considered a “condition” in our present system, it is more accurately described as an endorsement to the driver’s license. In order to get this endorsement, a client must hold a valid Class 1-6 license and successfully complete a written air brakes knowledge test. © 1997–2013 Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance {*Revised April 1, 2013} All rights reserved. 115 NOVA SCOTIA CLASS AGE 8 14 (parental consent) Farm tractors.
