National Artists of the Philippines Notable Filipino Artists in the Field of Visual Philippine's First National Artist Painting (1972) "Grand Old Man of Philippi ne Art" was a Filipino artist best known for his abstract paintings. Born on April 28, 1911 in Manila, Philippines and taught himself to paint. He started his career as a member of the Saturday Group along with Vicente Silva Manansala and Cesar Legaspi. His works proved that abstract and non-traditional style of painting can also result to nationalistic art. His major works were; Genesis, Calvary, Slum Dwellers, Fiesta: and many more. Oblation (1935) BENEDICTO CABRERA, better known as "BenCab", is a Filipino painter and was awarded National Artist of the Philippines for Visual Arts in 2006. He has been noted as "arguably the best-selling painter of his generation of Filipino artists." Tres Marias Mother and Child Carlos “Botong” Francisco was a muralist from Angono, Rizal For nearly three decades, Francisco painted murals showing the historical past of the Philippines. Most of his subjects depict the life in his hometown and highlight the lives of the farmers and the fishermen. Some of his major art pieces are; The Beggars; Peace; The Stairway; Bayanihan; The Ritual; Façade; The Survivor; Ovary; Gadget I and II; Idols of the Third Flight, Struggle; Eye; among others. ABDULMARI ASIA IMAO is a sculptor, painter, photographer, ceramist, filmmaker, cultural researcher, writer & articulator of PH Muslim art & culture. GUILLERMO TOLENTINO was a Filipino sculptor and professor of the University of the Philippines. He was designated as a National Artist of the Philippines for Sculpture in 1973. Bonifacio Monument ANG KIUKOK was a Filipino painter of Chinese descent and was a National Artist for Visual Arts in 2001. NAPOLEON V. JOSE MACEDA was a composer of traditional music, a pianist, ethnomusicologist , and professor. he was named national artist for music in 1997.
