NUTRITION IN ANIMALS CLASS VII Autotrophism NUTRITION IN PLANTS Photosynthesis, the process by which green plants and certain other organisms transform light energy into chemical energy. During photosynthesis in green plants, light energy is captured and used to convert water, carbon dioxide, and minerals into oxygen and energy-rich organic compounds Heterotrophism NUTRITION IN ANIMALS A heterotroph is an organism that cannot produce its own food, instead taking nutrition from other sources of organic carbon, mainly plant or animal matter. In the food chain, heterotrophs are primary, secondary and tertiary consumers, but not producers. CLASSIFICATION OF ANIMALS ON BASIS OF FOOD HABITS Eat flesh Eat of other Plants animals Only Eat both plants and flesh of other animals 5 Steps of Holozoic Nutrition: 1. INGESTION: Taking in food inside the the body through the mouth or a mouth-like opening. 1. DIGESTION: Breakdown of food inside the body into smaller and simpler, soluble forms with the help of various enzymes. 1. ABSORPTION: The simplified, soluble forms of food are absorbed into the bloodstream or body fluids that will transport it to all parts of the body. 1. ASSIMILATION: The utilisation of the nutrients absorbed from the food by all the body cells for growth and energy. 1. EGESTION: Throwing out the undigested remains of the ingested food. Special adaptations in organisms for procuring food Frog uses its tongue Different modes of procuring food Animal Mode Amoeba Pseudopodium Paramecium Cilia Hydra Tentacles Frog Sticky tongue Butterfly Feeding Tube/ Proboscis Earthworm Pharynx Human beings Hands Lizards and Chameleons Sticky tongues Birds Sharp claws and curved beaks Giraffes Long Necks Elephants Trunks HUMAN DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Mode of nutrition is humans is holozoic. The food ingested through the mouth passes through a number of organs in the body which constitute the alimentary canal or digestive tract. It is a long tube starting from the mouth to the anus. The alimentary canal along with the digestive glands is called digestive system ORGANS OF ALIMENTARY CANAL 1. MOUTH 2. OESOPHAGUS 3. STOMACH 4. SMALL INTESTINE 5. LARGE INTESTINE 6. ANUS DIGESTIVE GLANDS 1. SALIVARY GLANDS 1. PANCREAS 1. LIVER Saliva acts on starch and digests it Starch shows blue-black colour with (converts it into simple sugar). Sugar iodine. does not show blue-black colour with iodine. Click on the image below to play the video: Click on the image below to play the video: Tongue It is an organ used for taste.
