Building a Plan for Success (In-Class Activity) Think Back Pick one of the factors you identified as a challenge in your self-reflection assignment. How has this challenge manifested in your life/impacted your success over the past 1-2 weeks? (Provide 1 or 2 specific examples.) e.g., Coping Strategies: In response to the stress I was feeling about an upcoming assignment deadline, I went into major procrastination/avoidance mode and stayed up until 2am binge-watching a new tv show. As a result, I only got four hours of sleep and had to rush to complete the assignment the next morning before class, meaning I wasn’t able to do my best work. 1. There was a day when I was supposed to study for an upcoming exam, but I kept getting distracted by social media. I noticed that my productivity dropped significantly. 2. Do Overs If you could redo the past 1-2 weeks, what would you do differently to reduce the likelihood of being negatively impacted by the challenge you identified? (Provide 1 or 2 specific examples.) e.g., Instead of trying to deal with my stress alone and shaming myself for procrastinating (which only makes me feel worse), I would confide my struggles to a friend who I know can empathize and then ask them to be my accountability buddy by accompanying me to the library or staying on Facetime while I work. Instead of letting social media distract me while studying, I would put my phone on "Do 1. Not Disturb" or leave it in another room from the start. This would help me focus and avoid wasting time. 2. Double Downs What are some positive behaviors or strategies you’ve employed over the past 1-2 weeks related to this challenge area that you want to repeat in future weeks? (Provide 1 or 2 specific examples.) e.g., When I noticed myself getting anxious while studying for an upcoming quiz because of how much material I needed to learn, I decided to get up and take a short walk around campus instead of shutting down and taking a nap like I sometimes do to avoid stress. When I got back from my walk, I noticed that I felt a bit calmer—enough to allow me to get back to studying for another couple of hours. 1. Over the past 1-2 weeks, I’ve found a few strategies that worked well for me and I plan to keep using them. Breaking down tasks into smaller steps helped me stay organized and less overwhelmed. I also used timers to focus better when distractions came up, and I took short breaks to clear my mind when I started feeling stressed. Starting work earlier also gave me more time to finish without rushing, so I’ll continue using these approaches in the 2. future. New Strategies With the help of the internet and the NCCU ISSAQ Student Resource Hub, identify at least two new tools, resources, or strategies you’d like to use/explore to better support yourself in this area. Tool/Resource/Strategy: Timer apps Tool/Resource/Strategy: Mindfulness apps Tool/Resource/Strategy: Tutoring services Tool/Resource/Strategy: Study groups Tool/Resource/Strategy: Academic advising Tool/Resource/Strategy: Online learning platforms Plan for Success Using the new tools, resources, or strategies you discovered and what you learned from reflecting on your Do Overs/Double Downs, develop a plan of action for the challenge area you selected. Your plan should include: What you will do in improve your likelihood of success (specific behaviors) When you will do it (timeline) What obstacles or challenges you may encounter (roadblocks) How you will respond to those obstacles/challenges (contingency plan) What you will need to be successful in your plan (resources/supports) Plan/Timeline: Task Management App: Set up a task management app within the next week to track assignments and deadlines. Potential Obstacles/Challenges: Social media or any other encounters I face personally Contingency Plan: Use "do not disturb" mode on my phone Set reminders up and a planning calendar Resources/Supports: Study groups and academic advising SAVE THIS DOCUMENT: As part of your final UNIV 1100 assignment, you’ll be asked to reflect on how well you were able implement your plan.
