Hurts and Wounds Body Physical wound and injuries to the body Soul Emotional wounds when we fail to respond correctly (Biblically) to the issues of life Spirit Wounds to the Spirit caused by sin The focus of counseling Without a Covering Isaiah 30:1 Woe to the rebellious children, saith the Lord, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin: Man’s separation from God has left him without a covering. That is why Adam and Eve tried to cover themselves. Without a spiritual covering, man is now susceptible to the issues of life without adequate protection (covering). He is now vulnerable to the consequences of living in a sin-filled world. He is subject to hurts, wounds, and pain. Without the covering of God’s Spirit, man tries to find his own covering. Dealing With Hurts Type of Hurt Who Provides Treatment Medical Doctor Body (Physical) Proverbs 15:13 A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken. Problem Our knowledge of medical science is still limited Psychologist/Psychiatrist Soul (Mental/Emotional) Spirit (Spiritual) Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful Since the world cannot forgive sins, and since the natural man cannot receive the things of the Spirit of God, all the world can do is look for someone to blame their hurts on. Wrong counsel Wrong Covering 47 Three Types of Emotions As a rough guide our emotions can be broken down into three classes: Holy emotions – those experienced by God such as compassion, joy, and holy indignation and those that accompany life in the Spirit such as praise, worship and adoration. These emotions are derived from the kingdom of light and the Sprit (Ephesians 5:18-21, Colossians 3:16-17, Galatians 5:22,23) and are in agreement with true wisdom (James 3:17,18) They are the emotions of Christ in us. They are not necessarily only religious or pious emotions, but they are not negative, self centered, or self defeating emotions. (Philippians 4:8) Human emotions – based in our human situation and the created order and shared by Jesus during His time on earth. This includes emotions such as grief, pain, fear, abandonment, sadness and sorrow, anxiety, stress, anguish and vulnerability. These emotions are well chronicled in the Psalms. For the Christian they are temporary and in eternity there shall be no more crying or sadness or pain (Revelation 21:4). While these emotions may feel bad they are not evil or toxic. They can be painful but they are not poisonous. Fleshly emotions – are poisonous and destructive and include toxic emotions such as malice, envy, selfish ambition, sensuality, bitterness, overpowering lusts and murderous hatred. They are closely tied up with the works of the flesh and with evil deeds. Their outcome is spiritual death. These emotions were not part of mankind at Creation and are not “natural human reactions” (For instance grief is a natural human reaction but bitterness is fleshly. One can have “good grief” without a trace of bitterness. Bitterness is not natural to the human condition.) Rather these emotions are derived from the kingdom of darkness and have their source in a dark wisdom (James 3:14-16). This classification helps us see the relative value of our emotional responses and allows us to choose the proper method and direction of counseling. It also puts the lie to the old humanist rubric “there are no right or wrong emotions.” Consider this: Before the fall, was there anger, fear, guilt, and shame in the Garden? All emotions are not equal. Some are of much higher value than others and some emotions and impulses are positively wrong. This classification also goes a bit beyond the black and white classification of emotions as ‘spiritual” or “unspiritual” that causes so much pain in traditional missionary circles. When pain and disappointment are seen as “unspiritual” we simply add to the burden the person is carrying. Hurt, disappointment, pain and frustration are valid human emotions stemming from our lack of covering while encountering a fallen world. The above simple classification also saves us from the error of stopping there with our human emotions and being content simply to explore ourselves at that level. It tells us there is something higher, something beyond our mortality and that it is as we focus on our immortality in Christ that we develop the highest and noblest parts of our being. 48 49 Causes of Wounds to the Spirit Cause Walk according to the spirit of this World (Eph. 2:1-3) Manifestaion Disobedience Walking in Lust Fulfilling the desires of the flesh and Mind Walk according to the wisdom of the World (James 3:14-16) Bitterness Envy Strife Worldly, sensual wisdom Confusion Evil work Walk according to natural understanding (1 Cor. 2:14) Spiritual understanding cannot be attained Spiritual things are foolishness Spiritual discernment is lacking Walk in the counsel of the world (Psalm 1:1-2) Do not know God’s ways Walk with the ungodly Stand with the sinners Sit with the scorners Walk in our own power No endurance No Victory No root No comfort Walk in the knowledge of the world (1 Tim. 6:20-21) Profane babblings Vain babblings Contradictions Causes err to the faith Walk in the spirit of fear (Heb. 2:14-15) Fear death Live in bondage 50 Emotional and Spiritual Wounds Separation from God leaves no one to heal our Spirit Isaiah 11:2 And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; Rev. 1:4 John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne; The Seven Spirits of God The Spirit of the Lord The Spirit of wisdom The Spirit of understanding The Spirit of Counsel The Spirit of might The Spirit of knowledge The Spirit of the fear of the Lord 1. Separation from the Spirit of the Lord causes us to depend on the spirit of this world (satan) Ephes. 2:1-3 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. x x x x x We were the sons of disobedience Our actions were based on disobedience We were fulfilling the evil desires of our flesh We were fulfilling the evil thoughts of our minds We felt and responded according to our sin nature 51 2. Separation from the Spirit of wisdom causes us to depend natural understanding James 3:14-16 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. x x x This wisdom is earthly This wisdom is sensual This wisdom is of satan Col. 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. x x x x x Beware of worldly philosophy Beware of vain deceit Beware of the traditions of men Beware of the rudiments of the world Beware of any counsel that is not after Christ 3. Separation from the Spirit of Understanding causes us to depend on natural understanding. 1 Cor. 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. x x x Spiritual understanding is foolishness to the natural man Spiritual understanding cannot be known by the natural man Spiritual discernment is totally lacking 4. Separation from the Spirit of counsel causes us to depend on the counsel of the world. Psalm 1:1-6 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. Isaiah 55:8-9 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. x x There is a clear difference between God’s thoughts and man’s thoughts There is a clear difference between God’s ways and man’s ways 52 5. Separation from the Spirit of power causes us to depend on our own power John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 6. Separation from the Spirit of knowledge causes us to depend on the knowledge of the world which cannot lead us to God. 1 Tim. 6:20-21 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen. x x x x False knowledge leads to profane babblings False knowledge leads to vain babblings False knowledge leads to contradictions False knowledge causes one to err concerning the faith 7. Separation from the Spirit of the Fear of the Lord causes us to fear things of this world. Hebrews 2:14-15 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. x x The spirit of this world causes us to fear death The spirit of this world causes us to be in bondage Man living in a fallen, separated state has lost what God had initially granted to man. Man was to have direct communication with God, fellowship with God, and dominion over the planet. When man sinned, the consequences of his sin were immediately manifested. However, the greatness of God’s love would not permit an eternal separation, and He made a way for man to be restored to fellowhip. 53 Symptoms Wounds to our spirit affect our relationships with others. Our relationships become carnal and self centered. Fear controls the relationships; we fear our love won’t be returned, or we won’t be significant. We fear a loss of liberty. When our emotional needs are not met correctly, we do not respond correctly. Judge Place stumblingblocks Cause others to fall Romans 14:13 Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way. Speak hateful words Galatians 5:15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. Conceited & Provoking Galatians 5:26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. Lying Col. 3:9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; Speaking Evil of Others James 4:11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. Romans 1:24-32 (KJV Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. 54 Negative Reactions to Unmet Needs Before sin entered, man was in perfect spiritual, mental, and physical communion with God, each other, and the environment. Because of sin, man’s nature, and therefore his interaction and reaction with all things became fallen, or corrupted. The following chart shows what the negative reactions to unmet needs are. Human Need Emotion from Unmet Need Response to Unmet Need Love Rejection Distress Love God and Neighbor Significance Worthlessness Bitterness Accept Position In Christ Liberty Confinement Dependency Obey God Guilt Truth Sets You Free Perfectionism Be Filled With The Spirit Inferiority Believe on Jesus Discipline Emotional Sensitivity God Chaos Insecurity Longing Biblical Solution 55 Counseling Spiritual Problems Man is composed of a body, soul, and spirit. 1 Thes. 5:23 (KJV) And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We know the truth of this , now let’s look at how this came to be. Genesis 2:7 (KJV) And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Job 32:8 (KJV) But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding. Job 33:4 (KJV) The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. The Hebrew word for breath of life, neshamah, (Hebrew 5397, Strong’s) is also translated “inspiration” in Job 32:8. People live their lives with one of these three areas dominating. The body – that is fleshly, natural and material things. This is the lowest form of living. Romans 7:18 (KJV) For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. The soul – that is emotions, mind, will, memories, thoughts and personality. This is the 2nd lowest form of living. Matthew 26:38 (KJV) Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. Acts 4:32 (KJV) And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. The spirit – who you really are, created in God’s image for His glory. This is the highest form of living. In creation, consider this the heavens. The spirit realm. Matthew 26:41 (KJV) Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Romans 8:13 (KJV) For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 56 All three have to be fed. The body – circumstances and things. It is material. The body’s theme song is “If I Were a Rich Man” A flesh-driven person always needs something else, or better circumstances. The soul – feelings and emotions and atmosphere. The soul’s theme song is “Feelings” A soulish person often says, “I feel like” or “I don’t feel like” The spirit – feeds on truth! The spirit’s theme song is – “No Limits” When challenges come your way, you meet those challenges on whatever level you’re on: If you live unto the flesh – you move or buy something. It’s all about zip codes, pay checks, name brands and logos. This is a miserable way to live – keeping up with the Joneses – because that’s not how God intended for you to live! 2 Corinthians 4:18 (NKJV) while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. If you live unto the soul – you seek help in escapism, people, food and therapy. “I need someone, or something, to make me feel better.” So we become codependent in unhealthy relationships, because we think we need some other flawed person to “complete me.” But the Apostle Paul says the key to fulfillment is not found in another person, but in Christ: Colossians 2:9-10 (NKJV) For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. I can justify my wrong acts and sin by how it makes me feel. I go to therapy so someone will listen – not change me – but help justify my feelings. There is a difference between counseling and therapy. Therapy is therapeutic because it helps you feel better. Counseling is different... Proverbs 20:5 (NKJV) Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, But a man of understanding will draw it out. 57 In other words, in your spirit is the right counsel, because your spirit feeds on truth – and a man of understanding can help you discover within your own self the Biblical truth you need to act upon. Most folk live in one of these two realms. And most counseling takes place in these two realms. 1. If you live according to the flesh, you’re here more aware of the style on those around you, the growl in your stomach, or whether or not we’re gonna talk about money. 2. If you live a soulish life, you’ve come for a praise fix. It makes you feel good. People patting you on the back, saying the right words, etc helps you out. From Adam’s fall until Jesus, man was held captive by the sensory realm and the body. Counseling at the Spirit Level I. Let’s look at the spiritual indictments level against people A. Spiritual Blindness John 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 1 Cor. 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. Matthew 6:23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! Matthew 15:14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. Matthew 23:19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? 2 Cor. 3:14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ. 2 Cor. 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 58 Ephes. 4:18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: 2 Peter 1:9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 1 John 2:11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. B. Spiritual Bondage Proverbs 5:22 His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins. John 8:34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. Acts 8:23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? Romans 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 2 Tim. 2:26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. 2 Peter 2:19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. C. Spiritual Adultery Isaiah 57:3 But draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the whore. Mark 8:38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. 59 James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. D. Spiritual Resistance x People grieve the Spirit Ephes. 4:30 (KJV) And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Note: The people of Israel grieved the Spirit of God by their murmurings and doubtings… Numbers 14:19-23 (KJV) Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now. And the Lord said, I have pardoned according to thy word: But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord. Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice; Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it: x People quench the Spirit 1 Thes. 5:14-23 (KJV) Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. x People vex the Holy Spirit Isaiah 63:10 (KJV) But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them. x People resist the Holy Spirit Acts 7:51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. II. Let’s look at the Biblical principles for spiritual counseling. 60 A. A man must be born again John 3:5-6 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Ephes. 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. B. Understand that there are two ways for dealing with sin – the baby way and the mature way. The Baby Way 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. The Mature Way Hebrews 5:13-14 For every one that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. 1 Cor. 3:1-2 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. Feeding on meat, solid, spiritual food, is evidence of spiritual rebirth. 1 Cor. 2:14-16 (KJV) But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. 61 IV. Let’s look the spiritual principles taught for counseling at the spiritual level. 1. We have died and your life is his with Christ Col. 3:3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. John 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. You can now put your past life behind you Romans 6:3-4 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 2 Cor. 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2. We are free from the earth as our home Ephes. 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: John 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. As residents of heaven, we have been set free from the limitations of the physical realm and now have access, through the spirit, to the spiritual promises of God. Since we are now with Christ, we can be sure of our eternal heritage. 3. We can now escape the corruption of the world 2 Peter 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. Hebrews 11:13 (KJV) These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 1 Peter 2:11 (KJV) Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; 62 4. We are now dead to the law which held us in bondage Being dead to the law allows us to serve in the Spirit. Romans 7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter. 2 Cor. 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. a. Being dead to the law allows us to serve the Spirit of the law rather than the letter of the law. (See the sermon on the mount Matt 5:21 -) x x x x x x x x x x Killing vs. Unwarranted anger Adultery vs. Lust Divorce for any reason vs Divorce for Porneia Grand oaths vs Speaking simple truths Immediate retribution vs An attitude of love and tolerance Loving only friends vs Loving all people Good deeds in Public vs Good deeds in Private Public displays of piety vs Private worship (prayer, fasting, etc) Earthly treasures vs Heavenly treasures Serving God vs material possessions It is this basic conflict, between what one is allowed to do and what one knows should be done do that keeps one in bondage. When we counsel spiritually, we can refute, dispel, and repudiate the lies that hold people in bondage. For behavior issues, we can teach… Col. 3:5 (KJV) Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: Romans 8:13 (KJV) For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 63 For wrong attitudes, values, and beliefs, we an teach… Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Ephes. 4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; For old habits and behaviors, we can teach… Col. 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: 2 Cor. 4:16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. Man is a Tripartite being comprised of three structurally and functionally different but integrated parts or formal elements. The 3 parts are formally joined and function as an integrated unity or whole. The parts are different though and distinguishable from one another. The spirit part is non material and invisible being formed of spiritual substance or stuff. The Soul likewise is non material. The body is comprised of different kinds of matter or physical substances or stuff. The spirit and soul are distinguishable and structurally different parts - different things. (Non- believers have a spirit as well as a soul, though in an non-believer the spirit part is dead in the sense that it is out of relationship with the Living God. ) The Body is seen as the home of the soul and spirit during the individual's life on the earth. We are to be good stewards of our bodies which are a gift from God. When an individual is born again the spirit part is restored, renewed, and regenerated and becomes indwelt by the Holy Spirit. The relational function of the spirit between the soul and the presence of God is restored. 64 After the Fall Must Be Born Again New Man Genesis 6:5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. John 3:18; 21 He that believeth on him is not condemned: 21 But he John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto that doeth truth cometh to him, Verily, verily, I say the light, that his deeds unto thee, Except a man may be made manifest, that they are wrought in be born again, he cannot see the kingdom God. John 3:18-20 He that of God. believeth on him is not 2 Cor. 5:17 Therefore if condemned: but he that any man be in Christ, he is 1 Peter 1:23 Being believeth not is a new creature: old things born again, not of condemned already, corruptible seed, but of are passed away; behold, because he hath not all things are become new. incorruptible, by the believed in the name of word of God, which the only begotten Son of 1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a liveth and abideth for God. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. Definition “Lust” means to set your heart upon something that is forbidden, in an exaggerated, twisted, distorted way. It is possible to want or desire things that are legal and permissible, but they are desired in an inappropriate or wrong way. Lust is a sinful longing; the inward sin which leads to the falling away from God “Lust, the origin of sin, has its place in the heart, not of necessity, but because it is the centre of all moral forces and impulses and of spiritual activity.” In Mark 4:19 “lusts” are objects of desire. (Easton’s Bible Dictionary) Lust includes: x Mental, emotional, and physical desires. x Desiring things that are forbidden x Desiring things for the wrong reason x Both Thoughts and Behavior Psalm 81:12 So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels. sheriyruwth, (Hebrew 8307, Strong’s) sher-ee-rooth'; from Hebrew 8324 (sharar) in the sense of twisted, i.e. firm; obstinacy :- imagination, lust. Exodus 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. chamad, (Hebrew 2530, Strong’s) khaw-mad'; a primitive root; to delight in :- beauty, greatly beloved, covet, delectable thing, (× great) delight, desire, goodly, lust, (be) pleasant (thing), precious (thing). Matthew 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. epithumeo, (Greek 1937, Strong’s) ep-ee-thoo-meh'-o; from Greek 1909 (epi) and Greek 2372 (thumos); to set the heart upon, i.e. long for (rightfully or otherwise) :- covet, desire, would fain, lust (after). 66 Three Classes of “lusts” in the World System 1 John 2:15-17 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. epithumia, (Greek 1939, Strong’s) epithumia, ep-ee-thoo-mee'-ah; from Greek 1937 (epithumeo); a longing (especially for what is forbidden) :concupiscence, desire, lust (after). God created man with free will. Man was given the ability to make choices. From the beginning, man has exercised his free will in the satisfying of the carnal and physical rather than in obedience to God. The root of these wrong choices falls into one or more of three categories: lust of the eyes, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree … 1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. was good for food, Temptation of Jeus Matthew 4:1 - 11 v. 3 Turn stones into bread Lust of the Flesh and that it was pleasant to the eyes, Lust of the Eyes v. 8 all the kingdoms of the world and a tree to be desired to make one wise, Pride of life v. 6 Jump and let the angels catch you she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. People share their desires with others close to them. Hebrews 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 67 Lust of the Flesh Not only does the Bible warn us against “lust of the flesh”, the Bible identifies what “lust of the flesh” is. Lust of the Flesh Galatians 5:19-21 (KJV) Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Note that “lust of the flesh” is contrasted with “Fruit of the spirit”. Fruit of the Spirit Galatians 5:22-25 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Seventeen Works of the Flesh (Notes from Dake’s Annotated Bible) 1. Adultery. Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. Ephes. 5:5 (KJV) For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Romans 8:13 (KJV) For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. There is a common theme among the scriptures: 1. Do not be deceived 2. Those who do these things will not inherit the Kingdom of God What about people who did such things? 1 Cor. 6:11 (KJV) And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. Genesis 3:4-5 (KJV) And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. Matthew 6:22-23 (KJV) The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! When the eye of man was opened to know good and evil, he opened himself up to all of Satan's temptations 1. Lust for women (Matthew 5:28; Job 31:1) 2. Eyes full of adultery - men with men & women with women (2 Pe.2:14; Rom. 1:18-28) 3. 4. 5. 6. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. 1 Cor. 10:6-7 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. 1 John 2:17 …but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. 2 Cor. 10:5-6 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. 72 Pride of Life Old Testament Leviticus 26:19 And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass: ga'own, Hebrew (1347, Strong’s) from Hebrew 1342 (ga'ah); the same as Hebrew 1346 (ga`avah) :- arrogancy, excellency (-lent), majesty, pomp, pride, proud, swelling. 1 Samuel 17:28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage. And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean? Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel 4:30-34; 5:20 Claimed Honor for Himself Daniel 4:30-34 The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty? Then Uzziah was wroth, and had a censer in his hand to burn incense: and while he was wroth with the priests, the leprosy even rose up in his forehead before the priests in the house of the Lord, from beside the incense altar. And the king said unto him, What shall be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour? Now Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honour more than to myself? Esther 7:10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified. 77 How God Deals with Pride Proverbs 16:18 before a fall. Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit Brings Wrath Pharoah Exodus 10:3-4 And Moses and Aaron came in unto Pharaoh, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? let my people go, that they may serve me. Else, if thou refuse to let my people go, behold, to morrow will I bring the locusts into thy coast: Brings Scorns Proverbs 3:34 Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly. Removes the Object of Pride Joseph’s Coat Genesis 37:4-8 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him. And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words. Rejection by Friend’s and Family Moses Exodus 2:11-14 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren. And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand. And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow? And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known. 78 Refusal of Prayer Requests Paul 2 Cor. 12:7-9 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Humbles the Proud Proverbs 29:23 A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. Isaiah 2:17 And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day. Matthew 23:12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. Luke 1:52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. Luke 14:11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. Luke 18:14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. James 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Note: Notice how many times the proud are warned and what consequence is promised to them. 79 B. What is Humility? Old Testament Exodus 10:3 And Moses and Aaron came in unto Pharaoh, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord God of the Hebrews, How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? let my people go, that they may serve me. `anah, Hebrew (6031, Strong’s); a primitive root [possibly rather identical with Hebrew 6030 (`anah) through the idea of looking down or browbeating]; to depress literal or figurative, transitive or intransitive (in various applications, as follow) :- abase self, afflict (-ion, self), answer [by mistake for Hebrew 6030 (`anah)], chasten self, deal hardly with, defile, exercise, force, gentleness, humble (self), hurt, ravish, sing [by mistake for Hebrew 6030 (`anah)], speak [by mistake for Hebrew 6030 (`anah)], submit self, weaken, × in any wise. 2 Chron. 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. kana`, Hebrew (3665, Strong’s); a primitive root; properly to bend the knee; hence to humiliate, vanquish :- bring down (low), into subjection, under, humble (self), subdue. New Testament Matthew 18:4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. tapeinoo, Greek (5013, Strong’s); from Greek 5011 (tapeinos); to depress; figurative to humiliate (in condition or heart) :- abase, bring low, humble (self). James 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. tapeinos, Greek (5011, Strong’s); of uncertain derivative; depressed, i.e. (figurative) humiliated (in circumstances or disposition) :- base, cast down, humble, of low degree (estate), lowly. 80 The Bible teaches that man can contain and control his lusts through the help of the Holy Spirit. Daniel 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Job 23:11 My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined. Psalm 17:4 Concerning the words of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer. Psalm 18:21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God. Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Romans 8:4-6 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Galatians 5:19-25 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Ephes. 5:3-5 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Col. 3:5-6 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 81 The Key to Victorious Living There are two ways to deal with sin – The Baby Way and the Mature Way. The Baby Way: Psalm 32:5 I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah. 1 John 1:7-2:1 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. [2:1] My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: Note the three levels of maturity that are addressed in Johns letter. 1 John 2:12-14 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake. I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. [14 ] I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. The Mature Way Galatians 5:16-17 (KJV) This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 1. Stand fast in the liberty of the gospel and renounce all keeping of the law (Gal. 5:1-3). 2. Maintain justification in grace and obey the truth (Galatians 4-15). 3. Walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-17). 4. Be led by the Spirit (Galatians 5:18). 5. Crucify the flesh with the affections and lusts (Galatians 5:19-21,24). 6. Demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit in daily life (Galatians 5:22-23). 7. Live in the Spirit (Galatians 5:25-26). 82 2 Cor. 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? 1 Cor. 11:31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. Col. 2:7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Counseling Reminders x x x x x x x Remember, we are called to holiness. God has both given instruction and given us the power and ability to follow His instruction. God has not told us to do anything that we are incapable of doing. God has not told us to do something that He has not provided the ways and the means to accomplish that task. God does not allow us to be overwhelmed. God makes a way out of every situation. God will restore the years that have been taken from us. All things work together for good. Counseling Direction x x x x x x x Identify the true motives of a person’s desire. Have counselee confess that lust is a sin. (1 John 1:9) Confess the specific lust that is overwhelming his thoughts. Quit giving expression to the lust. (Hebrews 13:5) Explore the joys of giving and God’s purpose in giving. Pray for the person you envy. (Matt. 26:41, James 5:16) Have the client “reckon themselves dead to sin” (Romans 6-8) Help the counselee to understand the following Biblical principles: 1. One needs to view pride from God’s perspective. Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. 2. Recognize humility as a Christian behavior. 1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 3. Pray that God will reveal what is hidden in your heart. Psalm 139:23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. 83 4. Focus on the character of Christ, not on other people. Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 5. Understand and respond with a positive attitude Proverbs 3:11-12 My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth. 6. Understand that we do not really own anything Luke 12:18-21 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. The Prodigal Son Lu 15:18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, 84 The Indictment The indictment pronounced by Jesus: John 5:22-23 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. John 5:37-47 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. I receive not honour from men. But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. The world overlooks this simple point: Once a mechanic diagnoses and locates the problem with an engine, it is now easy to say what it will take to repair the engine, how long it will take to repair the engine, and detail the process of repairing the engine. So it is with God’s creation. Once the problem has been correctly identified, then the repair process can also be identified. Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Then herefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. Now For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
