FIONA SMULDERS ND HERBAL MONOGRAPHS • Our written communication about herbs • Provides a basic description of a botanical used for therapeutic purposes • Used across professions as a resource for info on materia medica MONOGRAPH STRUCTURE • Picture of the plant • • • • • Latin name & common name(s) Family name Part(s) used Constituents Actions • • • • • Pharmacology: Medicinal Uses/indications Pharmacy & Posology Contraindications, cautions, toxicity concerns & interactions Optional: energetics, taste, folklore MONOGRAPH EXAMPLE Latin name: Matricaria recutita Common name(s): Chamomile Plant Family: Asteracea Parts Used: flower heads MONOGRAPH EXAMPLE Constituents: Actions: Volatile oils (alpha bisabolol, azulene, chamazulene, matricin) • Anti-inflammatory • Antioxidant Flavonoids (apigenin, luteolin, quercetin) • Carminative • Demulcent • Mucilage • Vulnerary • Coumarins • Antispasmodic • Tannins • Nervine sedative • Mild bitter • Anti-emetic • Anti-allergy • • MONOGRAPH EXAMPLE Pharmacology: • Azulene volatile oil inhibits histamine release • Chamazulene inhibits leukotriene B4 production in neutrophils and blocks peroxidation of arachidonic acid • Bisabolol and apigenin inhibit lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase activity • Apigenin has antispasmodic activity and sedative effects MONOGRAPH EXAMPLE Medicinal Uses/Indications: • Topical use as wound healer and a mild anesthetic for rheumatic and muscular pains and neuralgias Useful for gastrointestinal disturbances associated with nervous irritability - such as IBS Inflammatory conditions of the GIT – IBD, colitis, gastritis • • • Motion sickness, indigestion Insomnia, anxiety, restlessness Hay fever and allergic reactions • • MONOGRAPH EXAMPLE Pharmacy & Posology: • Infusion: 1-3 tsp/cup water, steep 3-5 mins, covered. 1 cup TID • Tincture (1:5, 45%): 1-4 ml TID. 80ml weekly max • Bath: 50g in 10L water • Topical: poultice, lotion, salve, oil MONOGRAPH EXAMPLE Contraindications & Cautions • Use caution in early pregnancy and in situations where sedation could pose a risk • Allergy to the Asteraceae family Toxicity concerns • Generally considered a safe herb if no known allergies Interactions • Potential interaction with antiarrhythmics, anti-coagulants, anti-diabetic agents, anti-hypertensives, CNS depressants, SERMs, and spasmolytics MONOGRAPH EXAMPLE Energetics (optional): • Cooling and drying • Sweet, pungeant and bitter taste Folk Medicine Uses (optional): • For tension, pain and fever especially where the digestive tract is involved • Mental and physical tension and spasm accompanied by much complaining, whining and demanding • Used historically as a sedative for angry, whining, irritated babies and toddlers – “the child is peevish, whining, complaining, angry, demands attention.
