Evolution - The only theory in Biology The theory of evolution states that the diverse array of organisms on Earth has evolved from a single common ancestor over time. Evolution works through a process known as natural selection. Natural selection makes it more likely for the best-adapted individuals to survive and reproduce. These beneficial traits are then passed to the next generation. Over generations, natural selection of inherited traits could give rise to new species. Main differences The wild cabbage between natural and artificial selection The agent of selection man (breeder) versus nature (environment) The traits being selected Natural selection produces a great biological diversity. Artificial selection facilitates the inheritance of desired characters by the breeder. It involves mimicking the process of natural evolution in a laboratory setting to create molecules with desired properties or functions. The procedure relies on intended variation of protein sequences at a defined level of randomness. This is coupled to engineered screening and selection strategies. 8 Directed evolution is used to optimize biomolecules in a laboratory setting Create library of slightly a DiFFerent Enzyme. ㉖ Repeat the mimick natural process for Selection. best activity https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1367593114001240 9 「 小 Each gene contain a random mutation. Humira is used to treat various autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and Crohn's disease. It has since become one of the best-selling and most widely prescribed drugs worldwide. 28 Directed evolution enhanced by computational tools or DNA shuffling 29 Directed evolution enhanced by computational tools 30 Directed evolution and synthetic biology 31 doi: 10.1039/d2cb00231k Directed evolution lecture by Frances Arnold https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hOZ5e0g9Uo 32 Research article for CA1 Thursday 19 Sept, starting at 4:15pm.
