STAGE 6 Unit focus: Biographies Text focus: Information Text Кирилл Венедиктов, CC BY-SA 3.0 GFDL MARCUS RASHFORD Marcus Rashford is one of the most famous English footballers in the modern game. At the time of writing (just before the 2022 World Cup), he has scored over 10 international goals for England and over a hundred goals for Manchester United. Rashford was born in South Manchester on Halloween 1997. It didn’t take long for football scouts to realise how good he was. He signed for Manchester United when he was seven years old and has been there ever since. Liverpool and Everton both wanted to sign him, as well. When a player plays for the first team for the first time, it’s called their “debut”. Marcus made his debut in a Europa League match in 2016. He was supposed to begin the game as a substitute, just like he had in the previous Premier League match. However, one of the other players was injured during the warm-up before the match, and Rashford was roped in to play. It was a game that Manchester United was expected to win; they finished the game as 5-1 winners. Rashford scored two goals during the game. Not content with scoring two goals on his debut, Rashford started the next league game against Arsenal and scored another two! That season, he scored 8 goals and won the FA Cup, one of the most prestigious cups in English football. Not a bad start for a player who began by playing as a goalkeeper for his first team! If it was just for his footballing skills, Marcus Rashford might not be as famous as he is. Alongside his football career, Rashford is a long-time campaigner against poverty. Marcus and his two brothers and two sisters were raised by their mother in a house that often struggled for money and food. This has given him an insight into what living in poverty is like. During 2019, Rashford worked with a charity to provide homeless people with all resources ©2023 Literacy Shed http://www.literacyshedplus.com essential items during the Christmas period. This helped them to survive either on the street or in hostels. This was called the In The Box campaign and relied on Rashford’s profile as a footballer to help raise awareness. When the COVID pandemic hit in 2020, most children in Britain were taught from home. This meant that lots of children weren’t getting the free school meal they relied on when they were in school. Rashford used his reputation to put pressure on the government to make sure that these children were looked after during the lockdown. He helped to raise enough money to send food parcels to over 4 million children across the country. At the time, he said, “These children matter. As long as they don’t have a voice, they will have mine.” Rashford was awarded an MBE in 2021 as recognition for his efforts during the pandemic. RETRIEVAL FOCUS 1.
