Leadership The behavioral process of influencing individuals and groups toward set goals ○ Good leaders convince others that what they decide to do is for THEIR best interest Leaders, Managers, and Instructors Leaders are people that provide “vision” (organize and direct) ○ Person centered Managers provide infrastructure ○ Schedules, transportation, etc. Instructors are activity centered ○ Teach or improve skills Choosing Leaders Appointment ○ Who, generally, gets appointed? Someone on paper who “looks great” Someone we go to anyway should be leader Emergence ○ What type of leader emerges? ○ When do leaders emerge? Not always the person who was hired Studying Leadership Trait Approach ○ Someone who is naturally able to jump in and lead a group (“Born Leader”) Behavioral Approach ○ Non Sport settings Consideration (friendship, respect, etc) Initiating Structure (providing procedure) Ex. “We are gonna meet at Leroys next Monday for lunch.” ○ Sport settings How do we develop leadership through sport? Ex. “Just make it work” Interactional Approach Leadership Models Cognitive-Mediational Model ○ Reactive behaviors Go to reaction when you know someone is lying (“The Mechanic”) ○ Spontaneous behaviors Multidimensional Model ○ Highly interactional Cognitive Mediation Model Positive Coaching Behaviors ○ Positive Reinforcement → works better in situations and in the long run ○ Technical Instruction → knows how job is supposed to be done ○ Encouragement Multidimensional Model Leadership Scale for Sports ○ Five dimensions: Training (high in technical instruction) Democratic (lets someone have a say) Autocratic (“my way or the highway”) Social Support (genuine concern) Positive Feedback (limited to athletic contest) Types of Leader Behavior Required Behavior ○ Expected behavior in public forums Judge someone objectively - no favoritism Preferred Behavior ○ Preferences of coaching or teaching styles Give feedback Actual Behavior ○ Exhibited behavior of coach Other Leadership Topics Age and maturity of athlete Gender Nationality Sport type Psychological characteristics Qualities of Leaders and Followers Qualities? ○ What do we want in our leaders?
