BADMINTON BADMINTON It can be defined as a court game that can be played either singles or doubles by men, women, or mixed pairs. HISTORY OF BADMITON A badminton-like game was known in ancient Greece and Egypt - a game called BATTLEDORE AND SHUTTLECOCK HISTORY OF BADMITON Badminton is traceable to India, where it was known as “POONA” during the 18th Century. In the 1860s it was adopted by British Army officers stationed in India. BADMINTON is named after the duke of Beaufort in Gloucestershire, England in the year 1873. DID YOU KNOW? BADMINTON ORGANIZATION & DEVELOPMENT GOVERNING BODY OF BADMINTON The Badminton World Federation (BWF) and International Badminton Federation (IBF) are the international governing body for the sport of Badminton. INTERNATIONAL BADMINTON FEDERATION (IBF) Founded in 1934 as the International Badminton Federation (IBF) with only nine (9) members: 1934 IBF MEMBERS: 1.Canada 6.Netherlands 2.Denmark 7.New Zealand 3.England 8.Scotland 4.France 9.Wales 5.Ireland INTERNATIONAL BADMINTON FEDERATION (IBF) Has 130 member associations around the world, with more than 14 million members. YEAR : 1920 British and American presented badminton in the Country.(Philippines) YEAR : 1950 International Badminton Federation (IBF) placed the PHILIPPINES as its 21st member country. YEAR : 1952 Philippine Badminton Association (PBA) was form and became the first national group. YEAR : 1962 Johnny Yan and Stephen Cheng were the countries first doubles champions at the Hong Kong Open. YEAR : 1981 The Philippine badminton team participated in the Southeast ASEAN (SEA) Games for the first time. YEAR : 1992 Badminton premiered as a full-medal Olympic sport at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. YEAR : 1995 In Australian International Championships Weena Lim and Kennie Asuncion were the first Philippine entry (ladies double) to win a gold medal. YEAR : 1996 Badminton was again featured and has continued as a full-medal sport since then and MIXED DOUBLES were included in the Olympic Games in Atlanta. TERMINOLOGY OF BADMINTON DOUBLE HIT - If the shuttlecock hit the Racket twice in single action it is called as Double hit RALLY – Rally means continuous return of Strokes by both players over the net. NET TOUCH - Net touch means that no parts of the player including Racket touch over net during rally is called Net Touch. SCORING – The game is played in best of three sets with 21 point Game for all age categories in both Single and Double Game. The scoring is in continuous points for both players on each Service, if they game point that is called Scoring. TERMINOLOGY OF BADMINTON SERVICE FAULT – Few point relating to Service Fault are as listed below; (i) Service delivered from above waist level. (ii) If both feet is not stationary at the time of Service delivered. (iii) If the service is deliver from the wrong Court. (iv) If the Service is not delivering by concern player whose turn is done. GAME POINT – Game point means the last point of the Game through this point Game winner is decided. TERMINOLOGY OF BADMINTON MATCH POINT – Match Point means last point of the Match through that point Winner of Match decided. LET - Let means redelivery of the same point. It is called by the Umpire due to unforeseen situations. (i) Like unable to see the Shuttlecock. (ii) Fault at both sides of the players simultaneously. (iii) If the receiver is not ready to receive the service. (iv) Shuttlecock break during rally. (v) Shuttlecock hangs over the top of net. (vi) Light goes during rally TERMINOLOGY OF BADMINTON WAIST FAULT – Waist Fault means if the Service delivered below waist level is called Waist Fault. FOOT WORK – A good player usually covers all sides of the court in one step from the center. SHUTTLECOCK It is the official name given to the shuttle or bird. Originally, it is made up of 16 goose feathers and is firmly fixed in a leather covered cork head. SHUTTLECOCK It weighs from 4.74- 5.50 grams. It may be made of feathers, plastic, or nylon. BASIC SKILLS BASIC SKILLS Hand Grips Serve Shots HAND GRIPS GRIP - grab or hold the badminton racket - Example: Forehand & Backhand Grip. SERVE Low serve – is played gently over the net to land at the front of your opponent’s service court, near the short service line. SERVE High serve – is played powerfully upward so that the shuttle travels very high and falls almost vertical downwards at the back of the receiver’s service court. SHOTS Smash – hitting downwards but still causing the shuttlecock to go over the net. SHOTS Clear – hitting the shuttle high and to the back of the opposition’s court. SHOTS Drop – hitting the shuttle downwards softly into opponent’s court. OBJECTIVES: ❑ Identify the basic Rules and Regulation of Badminton. Define what is Sports ❑ Perform Badminton and Apply its Rules and Regulation. RULES AND REGULATION TOSS It is conducted before the actual game begins to determine who will have the opportunity to choose between (Service or Court) SERVICE 1. ODD (left)–EVEN (right) 2. If the server wins a rally, the server scores a point and then serves again from the alternate service court. 1 3 2 4 SERVICE 3. Always serve Cross court. 4. The side winning a game shall service first in the next game. SERVICE 4. Change of ends (Court) is alternating but there is change court in 3rd if any player will get a score of 11 point. SCORING SYSTEM 1. A match consists of the best of 3 games of 21 points. 2. The side winning a rally adds a point to its score. SCORING SYSTEM 3.If the score becomes 20- all the side which gains a two (2) lead first shall win that game. SCORING SYSTEM 4.If the score becomes 29-all the side scoring the 30th point shall win that game. INTERVAL AND CHANGE OF ENDS 1. When the leading score reaches 11 points, players have a 60 second interval. 2.A 2 minute interval between each game is allowed. FAULT 1.A player fails to hit the shuttlecock over the net. 2 Service Errors a. Wrong Court b. Short/Long Service c. Wrong Server/Reciever FAULT 3. If shuttle passes Through or Under the net or Touches the ceiling. 4. If the shuttle is hit twice. 5. The Shuttle falls Out side. FAULT 6.If in play, a player touches the net or its supports with racket, person or dress. 7.In doubles, if the player’s rackets will hit each other. FAULT 8. If in serving the server misses the shuttlecock, s/he may serve again providing the racket did not make any contact during the attempt.
