Curriculum Connection Name: ________________________ 32 A1.2, A1.4, A3.3, A3.5 Clothing – What clothing did they wear? The Aztec people wore clothes that were made by the wife of the family. Men wore loincloths and long capes, while women wore long skirts and blouses. The poor commoners had to weave their own cloth to make their clothing, while the richer Aztecs could purchase clothing or cloth already made. There were rules for wearing clothing. Laws were made to state what colours certain people could wear. For example, only rich nobles could wear clothing decorated with feathers and only the emperor could wear a turquoise-coloured cloak. Food – What did they eat? The Aztec mainly ate maize (corn). They would grind the corn up to make tortillas. They also ate beans, squash, insects, fish, honey, dogs, and even snakes! As a treat, the Aztecs would make chocolate from cocoa beans! Shelter - What did they live in? The poorer commoner lived in shelters made from adobe bricks. Adobe is made from sun dried clay. There were four areas within the average home. An area for the family to sleep in, a family shrine where gods would be kept, a place where meals would be prepared, and an eating area. The nobles had similar homes but made from stone. These homes were bigger and decorated with artwork. Entertainment – What did the Mayans do for fun? They played many games to have fun. One of the most popular games was a board game called Patolli. Patolli is played with dice and the object of the game is to move your piece around the gameboard. © Super Simple Sheets
