A stressor is any internal or external factor that triggers the body to respond in fight, flight or freeze mode. There are positive and negative stressors. The positive ones like a first date or a competition, can be exciting, are usually short-term and can improve our performance. However, negative stressors can cause anxiety, they can be perceived as beyond our coping ability, and they affect our performance. They can be long term too. Sources of stress include the environment, internal thoughts, physiological eg illness, accident etc. Social stressors are based on societal roles one is expected to play.
