Nursing Research 1 Praying and Checking of attendance What are the significance of research? What are the different characteristics of research? What is the difference between Nursing research and Research in Nursing? What are the different classification of research? What are the roles of nurses in research? What makes a good nurse researcher? Quantitative research a formal, objective and systematic process in which the numerical data are used to obtain information used to describe variables, examine relationships among variables, and determine cause and effect interactions between variables Qualitative research a systematic, interactive and subjective approach used to describe life experiences and give them meaning conducted to describe and promote understanding of human experience Qualitative research interpretative methodological approach to produce more of a subjective science than quantitative research philosophical base is interpretative, humanistic and naturalistic Knowledge and methods nursing knowledge historically acquire knowledge through customs and traditions, authoritative sources, trial and error, mentorship, experience continuing research brings about the expansion of clinical programs, theory development, technical expertise and improved quality of nursing care Knowledge and methods research shifts nurses from the status quo and traditional practices future directions in research include not only quantitative and qualitative approaches but also include triangulations Phases of Nursing Research 1. Conceptual Phase 1. Conceptual Phase A. Identifying a research problem Question or difficulty that the study seeks to solve “’Not all problems offer prospect for research because not all problems are researchable.” Titles of the study must be clearly stated, concise and should be limited to at most 15 words The variables of the study are reflected in the title especially the relationship among variables and the proposed target population example Work Values of Nurses and their Clinical Performance in Selected Government Hospital in Metro Manila Self Concept and Professional Attributes of Staff Nurses in Relation to Patient’s Satisfaction Index How do we determine the researchability of a problem? Guideposts: There are no available answers to explain the existing gap in knowledge Available solutions are not known or are untested Possible results, answers or solutions appear to be, or in fact contradictory Guideposts: A phenomenon exists which requires clarification and or explanation How do we formulate a research problem? Parts to be included: 1.context of a problem and its historical background 2.authoritative viewpoints on the problems 3.researcher’s interest in working on the problem 4. purpose of the study in relation to the problem Research Objectives directly related to the problem reflects the question the investigator wishes to answer at the end of the study Poor quality of data routinely collected by RHU Ex. Poor quality of data routinely collected by RHU Objective: To determine the timeless, completeness, accuracy and reliability of the data routinely collected by the RHUs related to MCH Research Objective To determine the impact of dietary factors, particularly protein consumption, on the muscular health of the participants.
