CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION TO NURSING RESEARCH This chapter provides an overview of nursing research. The topics covered by this chapter include nursing research in perspective, nursing research’s historical evolution, significance and purposes, paradigms, methodological foundation, and levels of evidence generated through nursing research. LESSON 1: NURSING RESEARCH IN PERSPECTIVE INTRODUCTION OF THE LESSON AND LEARNING OUTCOME Have you enrolled in this course because you intend to become a nurse researcher? You might not have a plan as of the moment. However, through this course, I am positive that you will learn to appreciate the relevance of nursing research in improving professional practice and patient care. Consequently, you will become inspired to embark on a future research career. Likewise, I hope that this course will help you develop the fundamental skills to enjoy a lifelong research journey. Research is evident in our daily lives. When we have a question, we search the internet, gather pertinent data, and conclude. This research activity has similarities with formal research, although significant differences do exist. At the end of this lesson, you must have demonstrated an understanding of nursing research's general perspective. WARM-UP ACTIVITY Through a concept map, write words/ideas related to the word “research.” Use the template below. Add more circles if you have more than eight responses. On the other hand, remove some circles if your answers are lesser than eight. Then, please take a picture of your output and post it in the discussion forum for this lesson. Subsequently, explain your output concisely using not more than three sentences through the comment box. Concept Map Template LEARNING INPUTS The term research means to “examine carefully.” Research, as a formal endeavor, is defined as a systematic investigation that employs controlled methods to address questions and find solutions to problems. Research ultimately aims to confirm and refine current knowledge and generate new knowledge useful to people, discipline, or profession. So, what is nursing research? Nursing research refers to systematic inquiry organized to develop reliable evidence on essential issues concerning nurses and patients. Through nursing research, relevant knowledge about nursing education, nursing administration, characteristics of nurses, nursing roles, and healthcare services develop. Clinical nursing research, in particular, usually starts with questions that come from practice issues, generates knowledge and technology that guides nursing practice, and improves nursing care. CENTRAL ACTIVITIES Activity 1 As mentioned earlier, nursing research is a systematic inquiry; that is, it involves an orderly series of steps. Listed below are the research process steps. Using Arabic numbers, indicate the correct order of the steps to depict an organized inquiry. Write your answers in the second column of the table. Afterwards, please take a picture of your output and post it in the discussion forum for this lesson. Research Process Steps Order of the Steps Stating the hypothesis 3 Developing research instruments Identifying a research problem 1 Analysis and presentation of data Specifying Methods to measure, gather, analyze and assess variables/data Defining variables Identifying the theoretical/conceptual 2 framework Identifying the population to be studied Determining the appropriate research 4 design Data gathering Activity 2 As mentioned in the learning input, nursing research develops relevant knowledge about nursing education, nursing administration, characteristics of nurses, nursing roles, and healthcare services. Listed below are examples of nursing research questions. Categorize these questions if they fall under nursing education, nursing administration, characteristics of nurses, nursing roles, and healthcare services. Write your answers in the second column of the table. When finished, please take a picture of your output and post it in the discussion forum for this lesson. Nursing Research Questions Related Category How do staff nurses describe their commitment to lifelong learning? How do women with breast cancer describe their experiences after treatment? To what extent are reflective strategies used in teaching? To what extent do hospital nurses educate their hypertensive patients regarding medications? How do chief nurses describe their practices in addressing incivility among staff nurses? WRAP-UP ACTIVITY Based on the above learning inputs and activities, give your general perspective of nursing research. When finished, kindly take a picture of your output and post it in the discussion forum for this lesson. ASSESSMENT (POST-ASSESSMENT) A ten-item quiz will be used to assess your understanding of the general perspective of nursing research. You will take the exam during our next class session.
