Assignment 2 Use the available evidence to support the design of a specific training program within a chosen sport. Through the literature, discuss the specific requirements for an individual sportsperson, taking into account the needs analysis for the activity and subsequent effects of modifying an aspect of training. Consideration should be given to the physiological, biomechanical and psychological aspects of increasing a specific aspect of strength. [2,500 - 3,000 words] Guidelines Choose a specific event within a sport or a specific position within a team sport. Discuss the fitness requirements for that individual by breaking down the different sports specific skills/activities predominant for that event/position. Use evidence from the literature to support this where possible. You may have to look in coaching literature for this. Critically evaluate appropriate strengthening literature to support your arguments for targeting specific muscle groups and choice of strengthening programmes. Much of this is likely to come from the physiology literature to help illustrate the physiological principles of the expected effects of your choice of regime. Consider the secondary effects of your programme on the athlete. Will it alter any biomechanical aspects by increasing body mass or momentum etc? Will it change any psychological aspects of the performer? You will need to consider both the positive and negative effects. Discuss how your programme is likely to affect injury incidence as well as performance. The philosophy of this assignment is to encourage you to take a broader view of the consequences of changing a specific aspect of a performers training programme. You will need to produce an outline of a programme in order to discuss it but the marking criteria will be weighted towards the strength of your argument, critiquing of available literature and consideration of possible consequences. NB strength training does not have to include weights.
