Till 1972, it was known as the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA). It gained the Union Territory status on 20 January 1972 and renamed as Arunachal Pradesh. On 15th August 1975 an elected Legislative Assembly was constituted and the first Council of Ministers assumed office. The first general election to the Assembly was held in February 1978. Arunachal Pradesh finds mention in the literature of Kalika Purana and Mahabharata. This place is the Prabhu Mountains of the Puranas. It was here that sage Parashuram atoned for his sin, sage Vyasa meditated, King Bismaka founded his kingdom and Lord Krishna married his Consort Rukmini. The widely scattered archaeological remains at different places in Arunachal Pradesh bear testimony to its rich cultural heritage. Arunachal Pradesh another popular name is Land of the Rising Sun. Administrative Structure Arunachal Pradesh is the largest among the seven Sister state of Northeast India. It consists of 25 Districts, the largest city and capital of Arunachal Pradesh is Itanagar. According to the census, Arunachal Pradesh is the 14th largest state in India with the total population of 1,382,611. The average temperature of Arunachal Pradesh is 27 °C, the temperature is generally subtropical and rain precipitates about 2,782mm (109.5 inches) Dams Highest dam of Dibang Dam. Arunachal Pradesh is the largest state (area wise) in the Northeast region of India, among the seven sisters (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Tripura). Arunachal Pradesh shares a total of 1630 km of International boundary; 1030 km with China, 160 km with Bhutan and 440 km with Myanmar. The state is inhabited by 26 major tribes and over 100 sub-tribes. Its climate ranges from sub-tropical in South to Alpine in the North. Neolithic tools have been found in Arunachal Pradesh which date back to approximately 11,000 years. The 400 year old Tawang Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh is the largest monastery in India and is the second largest monastery in the world. Some Facts The easternmost district of Arunachal Pradesh is Anjaw The westernmost district of Arunachal Pradesh is Tawang Tapi Mra, From Upper Subansiri, the first person to scale Mount Everest from Arunachal Pradesh. Anshu Jamsenpa from Bomdila is the first woman to scale Mount Everest from Arunachal Pradesh. Parsuramkund is in Lohit district. The Crossing Bridges, feature film in Sherdukpen language, directed by Sange Dorjee Thangdok was awarded the Rajat Award in the 61st national film award 2013. It was the first ever film was first ever film in Arunachalee language to receive National Award. Tamreswari temple also known as Kesaikhaiti is located in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh. Some Facts 55th Amendment Act of Indian Constitution, 1986 made Arunachal Pradesh the 24th state of Indian Union. Panchayat Act 1997, provides for the constitution of State Election Commission to supervise Panchayat elevtion in Arunachal Pradesh. The Inner Line Regulation Act, was introduced in North Eastern Region by the Britishers in 1873. Katakis officials appointed by the Ahom king Pratap Singha were the negotiator of ‘Posa’ with the hill tribes. The Yobin, also called Lisus, are a small group of people inhabiting in Tirap district, Arunachal Pradesh. The first all Women Police Station of Arunachal Pradesh is located in Itanagar. Sukapha founded the Ahom Kingdom. Some Facts Assam Bandhu was the first news journal published in North East India. Y.D. Thongchi is the first Arunachalee to receive Sahitya Akademi Award. Sartang are inhabitant of West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. Dalai Lama entered India from Bum la Pass (Tawang) in March 17, 1959 after escaping from Tibet. Asia’s third largest Orchidarium is located in Tipi. Doordarshan Kendra was established in Arunachal Pradesh at Itanagar in 1982. The entire state of Arunachal Pradesh lies in seismic hazard under Zone V India’s Longest Bridge Dhola-Sadiya Bridge Inaugurated in 2017, also referred to as the Bhupen Hazarika Setu, is a beam bridge in India, connecting the northeast states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The bridge spans the Lohit River, a major tributary of the Brahmaputra River, from the village of Dhola (Tinsukia District) in the south to Sadiya to the north. Baryi This song is a whole cycle narrating the religious history and mythology of the glorious past and takes hours to complete. Since it takes a long time to complete the song, it is generally sung in parts. It is also sung during festivals and religious and social gatherings. Nyioga This song is a joyous one sung after a marriage ceremony has been completed and the bride is left in her new home by the bridal party. It contains advice to the bride for her future married life. Apart from this the various dances also require songs to be sung and beats to be kept so that the dancers can perform to the delight of all. Solung Festival One of the popular agriculture festivals, Solung is celebrated by the Adi Tribes. The festival is celebrated in the first week of September, after the sowing of seeds, to seek prosperity and a good harvest. Mopin Festival As a matter of fact, during this festival you can see the locals smearing rice powder in each other’s faces; this marks the start of the festival. This is an important festival of Galo Adi tribe and it is celebrated during the month of April. Losar Festival Marking the start of spring and the first day of the lunar calendar, Losar is a popular festival of Arunachal Pradesh. It is celebrated by the people of Monpa Tribe who are said to be inhabitants of Arunachal Pradesh since 500 BC. Boori Boot Festival Exclusively performed by Nyishi tribes in February to welcome the spring, and a successful harvest, Boori Boot is a must experience over a trip to Arunachal Pradesh. Dree Festival This is the biggest festival celebrated by Apatani and it is marked by sacrificial offerings and prayers. This festival is celebrated on 5th of July and you can witness this auspicious festival in Ziro district of Arunachal Pradesh. Nechi Dau Festival Nechi Dau or Nechido is celebrated by the tribe of Aka in Arunachal Pradesh. The festival is celebrated in the month of November each year and lasts for four days. Chalo-Loku Festival The most colorful festival of Arunachal Pradesh, Chalo Loku is a harvest festival of Nocte tribe that is celebrated in the month of October-November annually; right after the harvest of the paddy field, and before the start of the new Jhum cultivation. Longte Yullo Festival Longte Yullo is one of the oldest festivals of the Nyishis tribe in Arunachal Pradesh. This must see festival has a unique feature and that is, Longte Yullo has neither ritual sacrificing nor any ritual chanting. Longte-Yullo is celebrated with traditional gaiety and devoutness on the onset of spring season in the month of April. Oriah Festival The festival of Oijale/Oriah is celebrated by the tribe of Wanchos who inhabit the Patkai Hills region in Longding District. Oijale us held either in the month of March or April and is main festival of Wancho Tribe. Reh – Idu Festival An important festival of Arunachal Pradesh, Reh is the festival of the Idus tribes on 1st February People of Idus tribe believe that they are the sons, and daughters of divine mother 'Nanyi Inyitaya. Sanken Festival Sanken/Sangken Festival is one of the most unique religious festival of Khamti/Singpho tribe in Arunachal Pradesh. Sanken is a three day long festival and it is celebrated on 14th February every year. Si-Donyi Festival The festival of Si-Donyi is celebrated by one of the major tribes of Arunachal Pradesh known as Tagin. Celebrated in the month of January every year, this festival marks the beginning of a new year Nyokum -Yullo Festival The traditional festival of Arunachal Pradesh, Nyokum is mainly celebrated by the Nyishi tribe on 26th February. The term 'Nyokum' is derived from two words - "Nyok" means "land or earth" and "Kum" means collectiveness or togetherness. Tamladu Festival Tamladu Festival is one of the ancient and popular festivals of Arunachal Pradesh celebrated on 15th February. This festival is celebrated in the Lohit district of the state by the Digaru/Tarun Mishmis tribe.
