Egyptian Art Introduction Egyptian civilization was once known as the most powerful, the greatest, and the most refined in the entire history Art is the aesthetic expression of the Egyptian people. EGYPTIAN ART The Pyramids The pyramids are the grandest monuments of the Egyptian old kingdom. These architectural wonders are the oldest buildings in the world. The pyramids were built as monuments to house the preserved mummy of the pharaoh. The reason for such pyramids is their belief in life after death. Great Pyramid of Giza served as the tomb of pharaoh Khufu Step Pyramid The Sphinx at Giza The statue of the Sphinx at Giza has the body of a lion and the face of Pharaoh Khefre. This is the most famous statue in Egypt. The Spinx at Giza Lighthouse of Alexandria Lighthouse of Alexandria The famous Lighthouse of Alexandria in Egypt is another wonder of the ancient world. The lighthouse took twenty years to build and was completed in 270 BCE. It was 384 feet high the equivalent of a modern-day 40-storey building. The Palette of King armer The Palette of King armer The Palette of King Narmer was an early stone relic from the Egyptian culture. It was decorated on both sides to show its ceremonial and commemorative function. Hieroglyphics Hieroglyphics is an ancient Egyptian system of writing in which pictures and symbols stand for sounds and words. Hieroglyphics The ancient Egyptians believed that it was important to record and communicate information about religion and government. Rosetta Stone Rosetta Stone is a stone with text written by a group of priests in Egypt to honor the Egyptian pharaoh. It contains all the things that the pharaoh has done that are good for the priests and the people of Egypt. Egyptian Pottery Egyptian Pottery The potteries of ancient Egyptians are mostly made of reddish brown clay. They served everyday purposes and were often left undecorated. Tutankhamen’s Golden Death Mask Tutankhamen’s Golden Death Mask is made from solid gold and is ornamented with blue glass, lapiz lazuli, and various semi- precious stones. It was found placed over the head and shoulders of the mummified body of King Tutankhamen, the youngest King of Egypt who died at the age of 19. Nefertti Bust Nefertti Bust The Nefertiti Bust is a 3,300-year-old painted limestone bust of Nefertiti, the Great Royal Wife of Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaten. Fontalism In frontalism, the head of the character is drawn in profile while the body is seen from the front.
