What is Modern Art? ❖ 20th century is recognized as a period of revolution and change in art. ❖ Artists were seen representing the world they know in unique ways or never before seen by the public. ❖ Introduced a variety of new art styles that not only broke artistic traditions of the past but also pointed the way to future innovations. ❖ Firstly, Europe was the birthplace for these new styles, styles that greatly influenced the art created later in America. What is Style? ❖ Surround us in our lives. ❖ We can easily identify specific styles of cars, kind of stores, and brand names of different goods. We know Adidas from Nike, SM Malls from Ayala Malls, or a Honda from a Volkswagen. ❖ In art, people note personal styles of specific artists. The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, The Glass Absinthe by Sunrise by Claude 1889 Edgar Degas, 1876 Monet, 1872 What are the characteristics of impressionism? Impressionists paint quickly in order to capture the “impression” of the subject right at the moment. Time and motion are also conscious elements in the works of the impressionists. Artists prefer painting outdoors because they believe that the color of shade is influenced by the surrounding colors, and therefore, must shine and filter through the scene and flood onto the objects in the painting. The artists’ subjects usually include the people of city life involved in everyday events, which may seem unimportant when compared with the grand subjects painted by earlier artists. Who are the well-known impressionists? French painter, baptized in the local parish church, he became atheist later on. The true pioneer of the impressionists, he was constantly exploring “What do I see and how do I record it in painting?” Monet had a long-lasting fascination in observing and painting light and nature. Claude Monet Many of his beautiful paintings show places in the garden he created 1840-1926 for himself and his wife. “Gare Saint Lazare” 1877, Claude Monet Monet went out to paint a train station in Paris. It showed the effect of light streaming through the glass roof onto the clouds of steam in the painting. He studied painting with several other painters who became known as the impressionists. He liked to paint lively groups of figures. He usually used the maids in his house as his models. His pictures were full of sketchy patches of color and contrasts of light and shade. He painted more than 6000 paintings. Pierre-Auguste Renoir 1841-1919 The Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1876 La Seine à Argenteuil Galette by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1888 Who are some of the counterpart artists of impressionism in the Philippines? Wassily Kandinsky 1866-1944 Black Frame, 1922 What is the influence of expressionism in Philippine art? The modernist stirrings – the revolt against convention and tradition – in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century were particularly felt in Philippine art. Coming back from studying art abroad in 1928, painter Victorio Edades, for example, realized that the modernist’s The Builders by Victorio experimentation and new perspective at seeing the world Edades, 1928 was what Philippine art needed. What is cubism? A new movement in art where the artist overlaps the flat shapes in an abstract design. What are the characteristics of cubism?
