PROF. Dr. MONA HASSAN MOHAMMED ALI prof. AND HEAD of Anatomy & Embryology DEPARTMENT FOMSCU INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1. Joints: Structural and functional classification 2. Structure of a typical synovial joint 3. Types of synovial joints 4. Terms for descriptions of movements JOINTS Joint is a point of connection between two bones Strands of connective tissue, ligaments, hold the bones together and ensure the stability of joints General Function of Joints: - Hold the skeleton together - Allow for increased mobility and flexibility of the skeleton. CLASSIFICATION OF JOINTS Joints can be classified based on: -function (what kind of movement they allow). -structure (what material is found in the joint and if is there a joint cavity present). Structural: Based on major connective tissue type that binds bones Fibrous Cartilaginous Synovial Functional: Based on degree of motion Synarthrosis: Nonmovable Amphiarthrosis: Slightly movable Diarthrosis: Freely movable Joint mobility comparison Note that as mobility decreases, stability increases.
