Cuenco Ave, Cebu City, 6000 INTRODUCTION Course Code: Humanities 101 Descriptive Title: Art Appreciation Teacher’s Name: Crislen Desamparado Email Address: [email protected] Course Description Art Appreciation is a three-unit course that develops students’ ability to appreciate, analyze, and critique works of art. Through interdisciplinary and multimodal approaches, this course equips students with a broad knowledge of the practical, historical, philosophical, and social relevance of the arts in order to hone students’ ability to articulate their understanding of the arts. The course also develops students’ competency in researching and curating art as well as conceptualizing, mounting, and evaluating art productions. The course aims to develop students’ genuine appreciation for Philippine arts by providing them opportunities to explore the diversity and richness and their rootedness in Filipino culture. Course Intended Learning Outcomes By the end of the course, the students must be able to: 1. demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of arts in general, including their function, value, and historical significance; 2. define and demonstrate the elements and principles of design; 3. explain and evaluate different theories of art; 4. situate Philippine arts in a global context; 5. analyze and appraise works of art based on aesthetic value, historical context, tradition, and social relevance; 6. mount an art exhibit (concept and development, production and postproduction, marketing, documentation, critiquing); 7. create their own works of art and curate their own production or exhibit; 8. utilize art for self-expression and for promoting advocacies; 9. deepen their sensitivity to self, community, and society; 10. discover and deepen their identity through art with respect to their nationality, culture, and religion; and 11. develop an appreciation of the local arts. Course Requirements ▪ Book (Art Sense: Sensing the Arts in the Everyday by Devilles et al./C&E Publishing, Inc.) Purchase at the University of Cebu – Banilad Campus Textbook Section (TBA) ▪ Long Clear Book (refillable) Color (yet to be decided per section) This will serve as the student’s portfolio that presents his/her artworks created and drawn all throughout the course. ▪ Art Materials (long oslo paper, ruler, ballpen, pencil, eraser, coloring materials such as cray- pas/acrylic or any other of your choice) The purchase of these materials will be based upon the discretion of the student. If s/he chooses to delay in buying them due to monetary reason then that would be okay so long as the materials are not yet needed in the class activities. If s/he chooses to buy them right away, then that would be better to avoid any cramming/burden in the future. The use of the materials will be announced before every art activity. Grading System 70% = Class Standing: Oral, Quizzes, Assignments, Seatworks, Projects, Artworks 30% = Major Examinations: Written, Performance-Based Passing Percentage: 75% Submission Policies ▪ Make sure to submit all requirements on or before the time set by the teacher. Noncompliance due to valid reason/s will be given time to accomplish the activity/ies and submit them according to the date the teacher will provide. ▪ Submitted files shall be in PDF for word document. For videos, the entry must be uploaded to Google Drive, adjust the setting to “everyone with the link” so that the teacher can access the file, and send the link to the teacher. E-mail/Messaging When submitting messages, please do the following: Write NAME, COURSE & SCHEDULE, CONCERN/TASK, and MESSAGE. E.g.: Juan Dela Cruz, Hum 101/07:30 – 09:00 AM (MW), Assignment 1, message… Note: When sending an electronic mail (e-mail) for your concern and other task/s, do not create a new thread just trace the first email you have sent to the teacher and click “reply” for easy reference. With this, we only have one exchange of conversation for the whole semester. Course Etiquette ▪ Observe office hours. ▪ Compose your comments and messages in a positive, supportive, and constructive way. ▪ Avoid uttering swear words while you are in my class. ▪ Use of mobile phones is discouraged especially during class discussions, quizzes, and major examinations. ▪ Give honest feedback in a respectful manner. ▪ Observe proper behavior in the classroom. ▪ Be active and collaborative.
