Basketball Rules Who invented basketball? Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian, invented basketball in 1891. He nailed peach baskets (with closed bottoms) to the balconies of the gymnasium and every time there was a basket they had to get a broom to push the ball out of the “net”. The Court Label the following on the court: Endline (baseline) Sideline Free throw line Midcourt Line Key 3 Point Line Basket Game Play Objective: The team with the most number of points at the end of four quarters is the winner. Number of players: 5 players per team on the court Positions: 1 centre, 2 guards, and 2 forwards Scoring: 2 point field goal - a shot made from anywhere during play inside the 3 pt arc. 3 point field goal - a shot made from anywhere outside the 3 pt arc. Free throw - 1 point is awarded to an unguarded shot taken from behind the free throw line Times of Play: 4 quarters To start the game: At the beginning of the game there is a jump ball. Two opposing centres jump for the ball to gain possession for their team. Violations vs. Fouls A violation is when a player breaks a rule in the game. This results in a change of possession (the other team gets the ball).
